COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mountaineer Food Bank received a $40,000 grant from TC Energy to support its Veterans Table Program (which helps veterans combat food insecurity) and boost local veteran resources across West Virginia.  WV News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mon Power & Potomac Edison notified the Public Service Commission they will file an application for a certificate to build a 1,200-megawatt natural gas power plant scheduled to go online in 2031. The filing will occur in early 2026 and is expected to boost local jobs and tax revenue.  The Dominion Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The West Virginia National Guard’s Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy - North program recently graduated 65 cadets at Camp Dawson in Kingwood and honored two cadets (including Cadet Dakota Toothman from Morgantown who earned the Academic Challenge Award).  WDTV
  • Kump Education Center celebrated its 100-year anniversary on Monday, Dec. 22 — a milestone that marked a century of educational achievement and community service at its historic campus.  WDTV
  • WVU has updated its holiday schedule to include a half-day closure at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30 and a full-day closure on Friday, Jan. 2 (both adjustments follow the state holiday proclamation). Winter Intersession courses will continue while the spring semester begins Jan. 12.  WVU Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Patrick Morrisey highlighted new economic plans during his holiday week press conference — emphasizing workforce participation, infrastructure improvements and removal of business obstacles — to boost economic growth.  MetroNews

SPORTS NEWS

  • WVU guard Treysen Eaglestaff scored 23 points + Harlan Obioha recorded his first double-double, leading the team to an 86-51 win over Mississippi Valley State at Hope Coliseum on Monday. The win ended nonconference season at 9-4 and sets them for Big 12 play on Jan. 2 against Iowa State.  The Dominion Post
  • WVU’s 2026 schedule shows the Mountaineers will face six teams undergoing leadership changes, including opponents with new head coaches and key quarterback shifts. The season opens at Coastal Carolina (new coach Ryan Beard) as Rich Rodriguez builds on last season’s groundwork.  The Dominion Post
  • Prep sports teams had a busy weekend showing strong wins and tough losses — MHS girls improved to 4-1 after handling Wheeling Park but then lost to Southern Garrett while University and other local teams secured wins ahead of matchups after the holiday break.  The Dominion Post
  • WVU defensive back Jordan Scruggs declared for the 2026 NFL Draft after playing 12 games in 2025 with 33 tackles and two pass breakups - he hoped for an extra eligibility year but was not granted one.  The Dominion Post
  • University linebacker Marcos Kniska was named the Howley Award winner on Monday by the West Virginia Sportswriters Association after recording 123 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, four sacks and three interceptions this season. He also served as University High’s starting running back (the first UHS player to earn the honor).  MetroNews
  • West Virginia played Mississippi Valley State Monday at 7 p.m. at Hope Coliseum to mark its final nonconference game in a 19-day stretch. After recent close losses, the Mountaineers plan to use the extra break to improve their play + prepare for Big 12 matchups that begin Jan. 2.  MetroNews
