COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday, more than 400 people ran the Run Santa Run 5K outside Rosenbaum Family House in Morgantown, racing around Milan Puskar Stadium to raise funds for the center’s care programs. The event raised over $35,000 to support adults and their families during treatment.  WDTV
  • Animal Friends of North Central West Virginia got a $50,000 donation from Betty R. Lynch’s estate through Your Community Foundation to help build a new 6,700 sqft no-kill animal shelter, & fundraising continues toward a $2 million goal with construction starting when $1.5 million is raised.  MetroNews

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Preston County Economic Development Authority purchased the former Spirit Energy site in Hazelton for future manufacturing development using nearly $4 million from the AMLER program for infrastructure upgrades. Officials say the 41.8-acre site with a 15,000 sqft building has already drawn interest from several companies.  MetroNews

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A circuit judge ordered that new charter schools cannot open without a special election for voter consent, giving the Legislature and governor 60 days to act (the eight current schools will continue serving students).  MetroNews
  • University High School hosted its first Winterfest fundraiser today to support a new sports complex. Local vendors, Santa and school teams provided hot chocolate + s'mores to entertain fans during the festive evening.  WDTV

  • Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe is showing steady improvement in a hospital in Washington after being shot last Thanksgiving, with WV National Guard noting he now makes clear signs + moves more actively today.  MetroNews

  • WVU coach Rich Rodriguez said versatile new signees like Matt Sieg may play both offense and defense (if needed) to help the Mountaineers win games amid a limited roster.  The Dominion Post
