COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Families can enjoy cookies, cocoa and interactive holiday activities with Santa on Dec. 7 at Erickson Alumni Center. Registration remains open until Dec. 5 with time slots from 1 to 3 p.m. and admission set at $25 for adults and $10 for children aged 4-12 while children under 4 attend free.  West Virginia University
  • Local holiday events bring cheer this weekend. Visit Mal's Christmas Festival (Sat, Dec. 6 at 12 Old Cheat Road) for s'mores and Santa photos, Christmas on the Farm (Sun, Dec. 7 in Fairmont) for pony fun, and Winterfest with free admission and fundraising for a new sports complex.  Morgantown Magazine

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mon Hills Music Group is hosting 'The Encore' showcase tomorrow from 8-10 p.m. at 720 Powell Ave. to mark its 10-year anniversary and feature live performances by Emily Lehr, Jennifer Cooper and The 2 Sides, with admission at $10 (or $5 for students if pre-purchased).  West Virginia University
  • Woodburn Hall was lit for the first time in over a decade on Tuesday, Dec. 2, sparking the holiday season as hundreds of Mountaineers joined the countdown — officials stressed that the event honors local tradition and community spirit.  West Virginia University
  • The Center for Veteran, Military and Family Programs will host a Pearl Harbor Day ceremony tomorrow, Dec. 5, at 10 a.m. at the USS West Virginia mast and bell * Oglebay Hall with keynote speaker Brentyn Jones and a planned 21-gun salute by local veterans.  West Virginia University

  • WVU is following the Stop Campus Hazing Act signed Dec. 23, 2024—training modules have been sent to student organizations and a hazing transparency report is now live to help prevent harm on campus.  The Daily Athenaeum
  • Christina Torgerson, a campus service supervisor at Facilities Management Evansdale Operations, is featured in the December Classified Staff Showcase—recognizing her team's work to keep campus buildings clean and welcoming for students, staff and visitors.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senators Jim Justice and Ruben Gallego introduced a resolution to designate December 6 as National Miners Day—an effort that honors miners’ contributions and sacrifices, with backing from the West Virginia Coal Association.  WDTV
  • Morgantown native Brig. Gen. Charles Dan Cooley was promoted and now commands the 36th Wing at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. He built his career on hard work and mentorship—his roots in Morgantown continue to shape his leadership and commitment to his Airmen.  The Dominion Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • WVU School of Medicine biochemists are using advanced imaging to study autophagy in live cells — a process that, when faulty, can lead to ALS, cancer, and neurological disorders. The five-year study is funded by a $2.1M NIH grant and involves Morgantown students.  West Virginia University
  • Hosted by the WVU Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the Mountain State Inflammatory Bowel Disease Symposium will take place March 27-28, 2026 at the Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place — featuring expert talks on new treatments and patient care.   • WVU Esports will host the West Virginia Scholastic Esports League fall finals on Dec. 12 at the Student Recreation Center, featuring in-person matches in games including Marvel Rivals, Rocket League, and more along with open play zones and career sessions for students.  West Virginia University
  • After a tough season marked by injuries, WVU head coach Rich Rodriguez signed three dual-threat 3-star quarterbacks on Wednesday to bolster his run-heavy offense, and he said he will add one more from the transfer portal this spring — deepening his quarterback room.  The Dominion Post
