COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local residents and WVU students gathered early Tuesday night to celebrate the lighting of Woodburn Hall in downtown Morgantown, marking the return of a cherished holiday tradition after a decade-long pause. Nearly 1,000 attendees enjoyed cookies + hot cocoa from local partners as the hall remains illuminated until mid-January.  MetroNews

CULTURE NEWS

  • WVU historians and scholars reflected on the loss of over one hundred lives aboard the USS West Virginia as they prepared for the 83rd anniversary of Pearl Harbor—this commemoration honors the sacrifices made during the attack.  WV News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The WVU community is invited to meet Beverly Wendland today as part of the search for a new provost and vice president for academic affairs. She will hold in-person sessions from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. with students at the Mountainlair Bluestone Room and from 1:15 p.m. to 2:20 p.m. with faculty and community members at the Mountainlair Gluck Theatre—she will also host a virtual session from 3:20 p.m. to 4:05 p.m. for regional campuses.  West Virginia University
  • On Dec. 1, WVU’s Faculty Senate met to discuss leadership searches for deans and a salary adjustment program that will use about $5.97 million from next year’s budget (the dean of WVU Libraries application closes Jan. 2 and candidates for law and arts posts were also interviewed). The senate approved updates to its constitution and set plans for the legislative session and a meeting on Jan. 12 (more candidates will visit campus soon).  The Daily Athenaeum
  • WVU’s REACH Student Success and the STEM Learning Center are offering support for students facing burnout before Winter Recess. The services include one-on-one coaching, peer study groups from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a de-stress event on Friday, Dec. 12—designed to boost study skills and reduce exam stress.  The Daily Athenaeum
  • WVU is accepting nominations for the Nicholas Evans Excellence in Advising Award, which honors outstanding advising by faculty and professional advisers. Up to five recipients will receive a $1,250 award for professional development — nominations close Dec 5.  West Virginia University
  • The Davis College Store reopens at Evansdale Greenhouse with a seasonal pop-up model offering a poinsettia sale running Dec. 4-6; sales will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Dec. 4 and 5 and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 6. Proceeds support student learning — potted poinsettias grown by horticulture students fund future hands-on projects.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state reached a $24.5 million settlement with Monsanto Company, Solutia Inc. and Pharmacia LLC for PCB pollution that harmed local waters and land + $12.5 million will be paid by the end of 2025 with further claims possibly raising the total to $60.5 million by December 2030. PCBs have been banned since 1979 because they can cause cancer, and the settlement aims to help protect public health and the environment.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a strong effort against Mercyhurst that limited them to 38 points and mixed performance against other teams, WVU’s men's basketball prepares to face Coppin State at 7 p.m. today at Hope Coliseum. Coach Ross Hodge said—improvement in the middle defense is needed to maintain their ranking as Big 12 leaders in points allowed.  The Dominion Post
  • Frankfort head coach Kevin Whiteman and Bluefield head coach Fred Simon are set to face each other in the Class AA state championship game—marking their second consecutive postseason meeting. Whiteman, who led his team to a state title last season with 27 straight wins—hopes to win another title as Simon brings 40 years of coaching experience.  MetroNews
  • In Morgantown, WVU head coach Rich Rodriguez vowed to rebuild the football team after it lost 49-0 to Texas Tech and said he will start recruiting high school and junior college players. More than 35 new pledges have come in as the early signing period begins today — key recruits include offensive lineman Kevin Brown and cornerback Vincent Smith.  The Dominion Post
  • Local sports reporters preview a Class AAA state championship game as No. 2 Princeton — with a 13-0 record in its second final appearance in three seasons — prepares to face No. 5 Nitro, which holds a 12-1 record.
