Good morning, Morgantown. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 10th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • First Energy announced last week that it will build a new natural gas-fired power plant at an undetermined location in West Virginia — choosing gas because a coal plant would cost ratepayers roughly $671 million more annually — as economic studies show gas plants have lower fixed costs. The plan comes despite a legislative push for coal-fired power plants and reflects market trends favoring more efficient energy sources.  MetroNews

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Five students including Morgantown native Matthew Bolling, Brogan Dozier, Erin Skaff, Abby Ruth and Isabella Hart were named the 2025 Mountaineers of Distinction on Saturday during the WVU Football game against Colorado — the award honors their academic and extracurricular achievements and was determined from 70 nominees.  The Daily Athenaeum

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SNAP benefits halted on Nov. 1 have left local families in Jefferson County struggling to get groceries—food pantries now distribute over three times their normal amount and serve nearly double the families compared to last year. Gov. Morrisey has directed $11.1 million for food relief and brought in the National Guard as local leaders organize donation drives to help fill the gap.  MetroNews
  • Hope Gas reached a settlement last week after all parties agreed on new rates, and the state Public Service Commission will rule on the final rate in December—if approved, a 21% increase will raise monthly bills by about $18 starting next February. The company also energized a 30-mile backup pipeline this week—helping local hospitals and spurring economic growth—while unrelated costs like naming rights were kept out of the rate case.  MetroNews
