COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Since 2011, Morgantown Urban Archery Deer Hunt volunteers have donated more than 15,000 pounds of ground venison to local churches and food programs. Last week, they donated 776 pounds of ground venison just as the government shutdown affected SNAP payments—more distributions are expected in the coming weeks.  MetroNews
  • Tickets are available for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Breakfast, where Jack S. Monell — a professor of justice studies from Winston Salem State University — is set to deliver the keynote address at 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 17, 2026 at the Mountainlair Ballrooms. This event offers an opportunity for community members to come together as they honor Dr. King’s legacy.  West Virginia University

CULTURE NEWS

  • The iconic PRT marked its 50th anniversary with events that began on November 3—local celebrations include a historical display at the Downtown Library Atrium and a walk-through photo history plus a retro-inspired sale at the WVU Bookstore on November 6-7.  West Virginia University
  • Lauren Adams, a West Virginia University alum and painter from Fairmont, returns this week as a juried artist during Mountaineer Week at WVU to display her nature-inspired works.  WV News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WVU now offers free, unlimited access to Bloomberg’s premium news and financial insights to its faculty, staff and students, courtesy of funding from the Sigma Nu Chapter and the Shawn Clothier Fund—this pilot initiative includes access to Bloomberg.com, the mobile app, and TV streaming while usage analytics will be tracked over the coming year.  West Virginia University
  • West Virginia University honors a select group of outstanding Mountaineers during Mountaineer Week—recognizing those who show loyalty, pride and service to the university community near Morgantown.  WV News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • West Virginia’s October General Revenue Fund collections totaled nearly $417.8 million—$42 million above estimates—driven by strong consumer spending and rising personal income. Year-to-date collections reached $1.789 billion—surpassing both projections and last year’s figures—as Gov. Patrick Morrisey noted that the boost could help address upcoming budget challenges.  MetroNews
  • Governor Morrisey announced on November 1st that the state finalized the sale of four long-term care facilities to Marx Development Group—with Majestic Care taking over operations to ensure uninterrupted care for residents and staff. The deal follows years of losses and includes a two-year leasing agreement along with plans for modernizing the facilities.  WDTV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Morgantown beat Musselman in a tight five-set match—winning the final set 15 to 13—to clinch a Class AAAA quarterfinal spot; the Mohigans lost their star player to a lower leg injury in the third set and will prepare for the state tournament starting November 11 at the Charleston Coliseum.  MetroNews
  • Head coach Aaron LaPoe led Clay-Battelle’s football team to its highest-ever state ranking after they won on Friday against Magnolia, and he credited strong teamwork and community support for the success. The coach, who also works as a special education teacher at the school, said his guidance has helped players learn to rely on each other—showing that winning is a team effort.  The Dominion Post
