Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 2nd of November.
Good morning, Morgantown.
🏘️ Community
Food banks are preparing for a surge in need as West Virginia hunters donate deer for Hunters Helping the Hungry in response to the federal shutdown and loss of SNAP benefits.
The program reimburses processors $3 per pound and is supported by today’s Share the Harvest Sunday—along with Governor’s One Shot fundraisers and contributions like 776 pounds from Morgantown Urban Hunt so far in 2025.
🎓 Education
Former WVU President Gordon Gee said he enjoyed his roles in executive residence at Ohio State University and will continue at Arizona State University (he is not seeking another presidency) while urging colleges to allow free debate to rebuild trust in higher education.
He cited a Gallup poll that showed public confidence falling from 95% to 35% (he believes robust discussions are critical for democracy) and warned that schools face an enormous challenge in protecting free speech.
🏈 Sports
University High boys’ cross-country team clinched the Class AAAA state championship at Cabell Midland High School last Saturday, with Micah Gainer winning and Ethan Conroy finishing second to secure its seventh straight title against cross-town rivals.
The win marks the program’s ninth state title since 2013—proving its lasting dominance in distance running.
Today, West Virginia beat No.22 Houston by rushing for 246 yards and four touchdowns, with running back Diore Hubbard gaining 108 yards and scoring the key touchdown on fourth-and-2.
Missing their top two running backs, the Mountaineers will face Colorado next week — where they expect to run strong against a weak run defense.
