CULTURE NEWS

  • WVU’s Filipino Student Association is celebrating Filipino American History Month with culture-based events and fundraisers — including language workshops, karaoke nights, and food-making events to share Filipino traditions. The group will host a bake sale on Nov. 6 in the Life Sciences Building to raise funds for future events and support monthly learning opportunities.  The Daily Athenaeum

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Morgantown hosted a 12-show Ruby Summer Concert Series that ended on Aug 29 and drew 2,000 to 5,000 people downtown each Friday while costing the city about $150,000 to $200,000 in manpower, artist fees, production, and local business support—with on-site vendors earning over $188,000 in sales. The city will announce the 2026 lineup on or near April 1 to continue boosting the local economy.  The Dominion Post

  • Patrick Brooks from WVU Student Legal Services advised WVU students to review lease terms carefully when searching for off-campus housing—he explained the differences between single and joint leases, highlighted the need to check security deposit and insurance details, and shared that his office offers a free lease reading service for first-time renters.  The Daily Athenaeum

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal workers are not receiving their paychecks and SNAP benefits for about 300,000 people will be delayed in November—Gov. Patrick Morrisey said people can turn to WV 211 for urgent food assistance. WV 211, operated by the United Way, works 24/7 with local food banks and agencies—providing updated listings to help those in need.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting
  • The state Public Service Commission denied Hope Gas’ request to postpone a decision on its pipeline replacement program and approved new rates set to take effect Nov. 1—raising average legacy residential bills by about $1.85.  The Dominion Post

  • A Lincoln player was named Player of the Week yesterday after showing outstanding skill in recent games—coaches highlighted his strong performance and potential for upcoming contests.  WDTV
  • Morgantown’s Mohigans, with a 7-1 record, will face University High, which is 7-2, at 7 p.m. tonight in the Mohawk Bowl as both teams seek playoff advantages + the Mohigans count on their dynamic rushing attack to counter University High’s strong passing led by quarterback Harrison Helbig.  The Dominion Post
  • No. 19 West Virginia ended its Big 12 conference play with a 2-1 win against Cincinnati on Thursday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium — finishing a 15-match unbeaten streak and earning a No. 2 seed in next week's tournament.  MetroNews
  • Trinity Christian’s young cross-country teams won the Region II Class A titles last weekend and will run tomorrow at Cabell Midland, with the girls starting at 11:00 a.m. and the boys at 11:45 a.m.—coach John Barnett said the team’s hard work and commitment drove their success.  The Dominion Post
  • Morgantown Mohigans secured a spot in the first-ever Class AAAA state soccer tournament after junior Anthony Vessecchia scored three goals in 15 minutes during their 3-0 win over Hedgesville in the North Region co-final+ the team will play semifinal games starting November 6 at the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Youth Sports Complex in Beckley as they chase their first state title since 2021.  MetroNews
  • The WVSSAC released seeds for a new three-class state soccer tournament with semifinals scheduled for November 5–6 and championship matches set for November 7–8 at the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Sports Complex in Beckley – this marks the first staging of the multi-class event.  MetroNews
