- ➤ Mountaineer Friday will take place on Oct. 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. outside the Mountainlair and will feature the WVU Alumni Association truck offering mum buttons & giveaways along with a WVU Bookstore pop-up shop, food trucks and more. West Virginia University
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ West Virginia University has launched a summer research program for undergraduates to use digital twin models to study highway systems. The 10-week program will run over May, June and July 2026 and will include a two-week trip to Cambridge, England where students will work with experts — the effort aims to train future civil engineers. - ➤ The WVU Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and the Committee of Retired Faculty will host a Zoom presentation by Nirmeen A. Sabry—Egyptian Cultural and Educational Attaché—on November 5 at 2:30 p.m. Sabry will discuss Egypt’s ancient history and its modern role in education, science and cultural diplomacy. - ➤ President Michael T. Benson marked his 100th day in office as thousands of alumni returned for Homecoming and he shared plans for a campus historical celebration and future events. He invites the community to join the parade on High Street at 6 p.m. Friday and to attend Saturday’s football game—steps that build on WVU’s new Strategic Compass. West Virginia University
- ➤ Statler College is hosting Industry Day on November 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Evansdale Crossing, Room 414, where faculty, researchers and professionals will discuss industry challenges and network with experts (research lab tours are also offered). West Virginia University

- ➤ Faculty, staff & students can join Sustainability Week events through Oct. 24; today's activities include a PRT station demonstration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., a river cleanup from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and an arboretum volunteer effort. On Friday, campus dining halls will offer special plant-based lunches & provide a chance to explore eco-friendly food options. West Virginia University

- ➤ Local charities warn that SNAP food benefits may not be available in November if the government shutdown continues, leaving about 277,000 West Virginians and 100,000 children without needed assistance. Gov. Patrick Morrisey’s office advised residents to visit Family Resource Network centers and food pantries while the USDA considers tapping its $5 billion contingency fund — a step that might only cover partial payments. - ➤ Superhero window washers dressed as Batman, Spider-Man, and Captain American scaled WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital on Wednesday to clean windows and bring smiles to young patients—marking their third year of service. - ➤ A new report by Trust for America’s Health shows that West Virginia’s adult obesity rate stood at 41.4% and children’s obesity was 24.1% in 2024. - ➤ The DEA partners with nearly 4,000 law enforcement agencies to host the 29th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day at multiple locations in Morgantown this Saturday, October 25th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—residents can safely dispose of expired and unused prescription medications to reduce the risk of drug misuse and accidental poisonings. - ➤ WVU defensive coordinator Zac Alley said his team’s recurring mistakes and lack of confidence have led to costly plays in recent Big 12 games—errors that allowed big plays from opponents—undermining their on-field performance.
