EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Erica LaRue, an Oakland native and University alum who has worked at WVU Career Services since 2012 and as director since 2024, was honored with the October Non-Classified Staff Salute for helping students prepare for their careers. Her leadership — including a website redesign that built key partnerships — has strengthened connections between students and employers. West Virginia University
- ➤ Faculty and students now have access to new online learning modules that focus on AI literacy, plagiarism, discipline & academic integrity. The modules help teachers design AI-resilient assignments and guide students on ethical use and privacy. West Virginia University
- ➤ Undergraduates from all majors are invited to submit abstracts to showcase their research at the 8th Annual Fall Undergraduate Research Symposium scheduled for December 6 from 1–5 p.m. at Mountainlair. West Virginia University
- ➤ Faculty and staff will attend President Michael T. Benson’s first State of the University address at 3 p.m. Monday at Fitzsimmons Event Hall at the College of Law as he explains his vision with input from the WVU System—livestreaming will be available. West Virginia University
- ➤ Graduate scholarships for the 2026 Carl del Signore Foundation Graduate Scholarship and WVU Foundation Distinguished Doctoral Scholarship are accepting applications until Oct. 19—master’s students must have their thesis proposals approved by Oct. 10 to qualify for the $2,000 award, while doctoral candidates working on their dissertations for Spring 2026 can apply for a $5,000 award. - ➤ West Virginia University media programs WVU News and Mountaineer Playbook won two regional Emmys each from the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences—recognizing their strong student work. WV News
- ➤ WVU will retire its Flex protocol for new submissions on Nov 9 as it transitions to the new Institutional Review Board module in the Research Administration Portal, and current studies from WVU+kc will be migrated to WRAP to ensure a smooth changeover. West Virginia University

- ➤ Greg Travinski was unanimously approved as BOPARC's next executive director on Wednesday and will officially assume the role on Dec. 6 after Melissa Wiles retired from the city park system after 22 years—he began as a seasonal camp counselor in 2007 and his appointment follows a nationwide search with over 40 applicants. - ➤ County officials now plan to use a facility on West Run Road instead of Hazel’s House of Hope for the emergency warming shelter—volunteers are ready to help with transportation and the site will need renovations to be made accessible, while Hazel’s House stays as a backup option until the final plan is set. - ➤ Monongalia County chose the Nitor Suites facility on West Run Road as the primary warming shelter for 2025-26 after a special Morgantown Community Resources meeting on Wednesday morning. Crews are finishing improvements for accessibility — Hazel's House of Hope will serve as the backup option if needed. MetroNews
- ➤ Former Sen. Joe Manchin received a Hydrogen Leadership Award at the Hydrogen Americas Summit in Washington, D.C. on National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day for advancing clean hydrogen technology that helped secure $9.5 billion in funding, including $8 billion for regional hydrogen hubs that benefit West Virginia’s economy+ created local jobs. - ➤ The West Virginia Bureau for Public Health said hand, foot and mouth disease is on the rise after a Sept. 25 release. WVU medical director Carmen Burrell said the virus spreads easily in dorms, classrooms — so students and staff should wash their hands, clean surfaces, and stay home if they feel sick. - ➤ WVU Medicine is offering state-of-the-art concussion care for domestic violence survivors. Thirteen specialists provide free evaluations for headaches and dizziness and use treatments such as float tanks and light therapy—ensuring survivors get the same support as athletes. WDTV
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ It has been nearly 10 months since Rich Rodriguez was introduced as WVU’s football coach at Hope Coliseum—critics say his public outreach has not earned fans’ trust as the team struggles in the Big 12 and shows low performance. - ➤ Today, WVU’s men’s and women’s soccer teams are ranked No. 5 in the RPI + the men’s team is 7-1-2 while the women’s team is 8-2-2, both on winning streaks since early in the season.
