EDUCATION NEWS

  • During Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Information Technology Services advises WVU users to create long, unique passwords to protect their login and personal accounts. The guidelines suggest using a memorable passphrase and a password manager (to manage numerous passwords) for extra security.  West Virginia University
  • State legislators kicked off their October interim meetings Sunday by approving 167 retired teachers—covering 276 content areas—to ease shortages and by discussing an academic partnership with Ireland to boost workforce readiness. Lawmakers will meet through Tuesday afternoon to continue reviewing education proposals and programs.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting
  • WVU has endorsed three students for competitive scholarships—Felicia Carrara for both the British Marshall and Rhodes, and Kelsey Clodfelter and Zachary Taylor for the Rhodes. The awards will help the students study abroad and build careers in international studies, art conservation, and engineering.  West Virginia University
  • WVU will honor August and December graduates at two Commencement ceremonies at Hope Coliseum on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.—graduates must apply by Oct. 10 and register starting Oct. 13 to participate.  West Virginia University

  • West Virginia’s severance tax collections increased 10% as natural gas prices surged — Deputy Revenue Secretary Mark Muchow told state lawmakers Monday.  WV News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • I-79 North in Monongalia County is completely closed tonight from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m. tomorrow for Triton Construction to repair a damaged attenuator in the Uffington Bridge work zone—officials advise drivers to take I-68 and exit 1 to rejoin I-79 North.  WDTV
  • Today, the city of Morgantown is exploring the Mosaic Neighborhood Pride and Engagement Initiative, which would offer 50% matching grants for neighborhood projects. Councilor Mark Downs said the Neighborhood Coordinating Council will vet proposals—such as public art and beautification efforts—to strengthen local engagement.  The Dominion Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • Wilson Martino Dental is providing free dental care to active military and veterans as part of Freedom Day USA, offering services that include cleanings, dental exams, and same-day dental work. The dental office provided these services on Monday in Bridgeport, Buckhannon, Elkins and Nutter Fort and will serve patients at its Morgantown office Friday.  WDTV

  • WVU athletes inspired local children at Get Moving’s Mini Day of Play at Mylan Park Elementary School Monday afternoon in Morgantown — the event featured sports and games that encouraged physical activity.  WV News
  • WVU's women's basketball team will hold a closed scrimmage before playing an exhibition against the Falcons on October 26 and will open their season against Purdue Fort Wayne on November 3. Coach Kellogg said the scrimmage will offer strong competition—while some players face injuries—to help decide who earns more minutes as roles change.  MetroNews
