BUSINESS NEWS

  • Mon Power and Potomac Edison are exploring adding a 1,200 MW natural gas combined-cycle plant in service by 2031—while keeping their coal units open through 2035, adding 70 MW of solar by 2028 and using short-term power purchases to maintain reliability until new resources are available.  The Dominion Post
  • Styx and Stones Appalachian BBQ is expanding into a new location at 237 Spruce St. in Morgantown and will offer over 100 seats compared to 20 at its old site—owner Harry Stone said the restaurant will start operating this month with a grand opening on Nov. 1 while hosting community events and hiring new staff.  The Daily Athenaeum

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Morgantown is hosting the October Arts Walk and First Friday for the Arts today from 6 to 9 p.m.—a Halloween-themed event featuring eerie art, live music, and costume-friendly fun with vendors and special local exhibits along High Street.  West Virginia University

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Nonprofits in West Virginia faced a funding crisis after the federal government officially shut down on Wednesday — leaving federal workers and key programs without needed support.  WV News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University invites faculty, staff, students, alumni & other supporters to complete the Strategic Compass Feedback Survey, which takes less than 15 minutes and will close at midnight on Oct. 10. The feedback will guide the University’s future and help plan the next steps in operational planning.  West Virginia University
  • WVU hosted the virtual West Virginia State Advising Conference on Sept 17 with over 100 advising professionals attending sessions on supporting students. During the conference, Semoa De Sousa-Brown was honored with the inaugural West Virginia Excellence in Academic Advising award for her commitment to guiding undergraduate students—her flexible virtual hours help meet their needs.  West Virginia University

  • Morgantown native Master Sgt. Marc B. Manilla—son of a former mayor—was honored with a Purple Heart for his service. He remembers Jan. 13, 2007 as a day that marked his bravery and sacrifice.  WV News

  • Dr. Rahul Gupta, former West Virginia health commissioner and president of GATC Health, will deliver the keynote speech at Global Health Week 2025 on Monday, Oct. 6 at noon in Room 1905 of the Health Sciences Center North — a Zoom option is available.  West Virginia University

SPORTS NEWS

  • West Virginia will have a new starting quarterback today — as they face BYU at 10:30 p.m. — after ruling out Jaylen Henderson due to injuries from last week’s game; redshirt freshman Khalil Wilkins is expected to start while backup Max Brown remains questionable.  MetroNews
  • Greg Carey & Joe Brocato previewed key Class A football matchups for Week 6, outlining the top teams and setting the stage for the upcoming games in Morgantown.  MetroNews
  • Morgantown High School faces No. 3 Wheeling Park today at Pony Lewis Field as the Patriots work to contain star running back Brennan Wack who remains a game time decision after a hamstring injury. The team, now with a record of 4 to 1, will test its defense against a strong rival on one of the season’s toughest matchups—challenging its ability to stop Wack’s rushing attack.  The Dominion Post
  • Trinity soccer celebrated Senior Night on Wednesday with a 7-0 win over Lincoln as seniors including Parker Hopkins led the team in scoring key goals and maintaining control throughout the match. Coach Dan Lohmann said the win boosted team confidence ahead of upcoming playoffs (with matchups against Charleston Catholic on Friday and Morgantown next week).  The Dominion Post
