COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mountaineer Food Bank received a $10,000 grant from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation — funding that will help fight hunger in West Virginia.  WV News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Noble Cafe & Bakery opened in May at 918 Chestnut Ridge Road where owners Vince Duong and Huy Lam serve unique coffee and pastry pairings including a popular Phin Coffee with a Portuguese egg tart. The cafe aims to be a welcoming spot for the local community to gather and try creative flavors.  Morgantown Magazine
  • A new Dave & Buster’s will come to Monongalia County at West Ridge business and retail park near HomeGoods, Burlington and Menard’s. The project, awarded to ABS Building Systems Integrators, will start with a full ground-up build — including an arcade, state-of-the-art kitchen and bar, and entertainment spaces.  WDTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Residents in Morgantown can enjoy a variety of spooky attractions this October for Halloween fun—options range from pumpkin picking and hayrides at Poplar Island Pumpkins in Fairmont to haunted tours at the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum near Weston, Fright Farm in Smithfield, Nemacolin Castle ghost walks, Haunted Hills Estate Scream Park, Hundred Acres Manor events and West Virginia Penitentiary tours. Family-friendly events mix with more intense scares, and the Frank N Stein beer festival on November 1 will round out the season.  Morgantown Magazine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WVU will host Fall Family Weekend from Oct 3-5 as family members visit campus to see student life and meet current students (parking is limited at the Mountainlair and Student Rec Center).  West Virginia University
  • The WVU Planetarium at White Hall has provided weekly astronomy shows for over 30 years for WVU students and residents and now offers public nights when visitors can use a telescope to see a full 180° view of the night sky. The program—directed by Jason Ybarra—covers topics such as Saturn and Beyond and is open to school field trips and local learners.  The Daily Athenaeum
  • WVU Student Life will posthumously honor Doug Skaff Jr. with the Outstanding Achievement Award and induct Michael Ellington and Sonja Wilson into the 2025 Hall of Fame during a ceremony starting at 4 p.m. Monday — Oct.6 — at the Mountainlair Ballrooms; Skaff’s three sons will accept the award on his behalf and the public may join a reception at 3:30 p.m.  WVU Today
  • Paul Hardesty, president of the state school board, said in today’s meeting that school choice policies have led to over 35,000 student losses and historic public school consolidations. He said the board will take a snapshot of second month enrollment tomorrow—and he expects further school closures unless lawmakers adjust the school aid formula for rural areas.  MetroNews

  • The state reported that September collections exceeded estimates by nearly $43.7 million as totals reached $585,698,090 and were 3.2% above last September—state officials noted that year-to-date receipts of $1.371 billion surpassed forecasts by $61 million. Gov. Patrick Morrisey credited earlier fiscal decisions and efficient tax policies for driving the strong performance.  MetroNews
  • Morgantown City Council and local service providers met Tuesday to plan warming centers for this winter — the centers will open as the city enforces its new camping ban.  WV News
  • Morgantown City Council held its Committee of the Whole session Tuesday to review issues such as pensions, housing, zoning, and climate commitments—efforts set to shape future local policy.  WV News

HEALTH NEWS

  • West Virginia University research finds that men are two to three times more likely than women to die from unintentional overdoses because they often drink alcohol while using fentanyl and other drugs—this deadly mix increases toxicity by lowering the ability to breathe.  WVU Today

SPORTS NEWS

  • WVU men’s soccer team will host Georgia Southern Saturday and hopes to earn a top ten win after a 2-2 draw with High Point, while the WVU women’s soccer team welcomes Arizona today—set to face Arizona State on Sunday—as they return home after several road matches. This weekend’s games could boost the Mountaineers’ standings in their conference.  MetroNews
  • The Hope Gas Ice Pavilion opened at Mylan Park on Sept. 8 as a $14 million facility built with support from Hope Gas and the Hazel Ruby McQuain Charitable Trust. It now houses five club hockey teams, eight locker rooms, and seats about 1200 for games and public skating — a new hub for hockey in the area.  The Daily Athenaeum
