COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Christopher McGee was named Rider of the Month for September—he was recognized for his exceptional courtesy on Mountain Line and will receive a 30-day pass, promotional prizes, and a certificate of appreciation.  WDTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Faculty and staff have a new resource for community engagement as the Center for Community Engagement launched its newsletter yesterday—each edition will include webinars, curated readings, and service-learning highlights at WVU.  West Virginia University
  • Morgantown High School student Joyce Q. Hu was named a 2025 U.S. Presidential Scholar — one of two West Virginia honorees among 161 top high school seniors in the nation. The honor shows she did very well in school as one of over 6,400 candidates chosen from 3.9 million graduates.  WDTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • WVU’s personal rapid transit system opened 50 years ago to ease Morgantown traffic—despite early delays and cost overruns, it evolved into a reliable service that now spurs interest in modern transit ideas.  Morgantown Magazine

HEALTH NEWS

  • The West Virginia Bureau for Public Health reported 38 outbreaks of hand, foot, mouth disease this year—17 since September 1. The illness usually affects young children but can also infect older people, and its symptoms include fever, painful mouth sores, and rashes on the hands and feet.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting
  • The Matthew Perry Foundation partnered with the Healing Appalachia festival to support local recovery programs and job training, honoring the late actor’s legacy by funding efforts to fight addiction stigma in West Virginia—efforts that included recovery meetings and volunteer support. The initiative aims to help locals overcome the challenges of addiction and boost community resilience.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

SPORTS NEWS

  • West Virginia football added two new commitments for the class of 2026 after a 48-14 loss to Utah. 3-star quarterback Wyatt Brown from Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks and 3-star pass rusher Carter Kessler from Shelby, Ohio—who visited before the Utah game—joined WVU, raising the total to 26 commitments.  The Dominion Post
  • WVU’s defense struggled against Utah as they allowed 48 points and 532 yards with touchdowns on nearly every drive until a free-be interception stopped the Utes—coach Rich Rodriguez said the team missed key tackles and lacked execution. The team will focus on fixing these mistakes in today’s practice to prepare for Friday’s game against BYU.  The Dominion Post
  • Morgantown High School cheer team—now with 13 girls including six new members—won first place in the Small Varsity division at the 2025 WVSSAC Gameday Invitational at the Rowdie Center. The team showed strong energy and adaptability as they captured the championship trophy.  The Dominion Post
