ECONOMY NEWS

  • Clean energy jobs in West Virginia grew nearly 5% in 2024—placing the state in the top 10 for growth as reported by national policy group E2. The state had just under 11,000 such jobs, and renewable generation increased nearly 8% in wind, solar, geothermal, bioenergy and hydropower.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting
  • West Virginia gas stations now charge an average of $2.98 per gallon—this rate is lower than the national average and helps ease costs at the pump.  WV News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The ADVANCE Center invites faculty and staff to register for a Fall 2025 Mentoring Workshop Series— a two-part in-person program featuring interactive sessions adapted from the NSF-funded MarSci-LACE Mentor Development model— by Oct. 3.  West Virginia University
  • Morgantown Campus faculty and instructors are asked to submit their top student nominations for the Presidential Student Ambassadors program by 5 p.m. on Sept. 26. Nominees must be freshmen or sophomores (with a minimum 3.7 GPA and an anticipated graduation date of spring 2027 or later) and must be enrolled at WVU in Morgantown.  West Virginia University
  • WVU faculty and staff are invited by Purpose Center Director Cate Schlobohm to join the Week of Purpose that began Sept. 22, which features a Strengths workshop at 1 p.m. today and another at 11 a.m. Friday while four-week Strengths-based career and leadership pods will start in October with an in-person session on Oct. 8 at Mountainlair and a virtual session on Oct. 21.  West Virginia University
  • The West Virginia Innocence Project clinic at WVU College of Law uses private donations to fund legal aid for wrongfully convicted clients and gives law students hands-on training as they handle individual cases with a dedicated staff attorney—expanding its impact across the state.  WVU Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the Morgantown Board of Zoning Appeals denied West Virginia Sober Living's request to waive off-street parking rules for its sober living home at 201 Waitman St due to limited space and safety concerns—residents reported ongoing parking issues in the busy historic district. The organization can appeal the decision in circuit court within 30 days.  The Dominion Post
  • Crews began placing steel girders on the Tom's Run Ridge and Goshen Road bridges Monday evening and work nightly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. until Wednesday, causing delays on I-79 northbound between mile markers 141 to 146 near Goshen Road. Drivers should plan extra time for travel in Monongalia County.  WDTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The West Virginia First Foundation is accepting applications for the $19.2 million Momentum Initiative Grant to help fight drug addiction by funding programs in prevention, recovery and emergency care statewide—applicants must submit proposals online by noon Oct. 10 as the grant supports services in foster care, youth support, recovery housing, mental health and reentry work.  MetroNews

  • WVU men’s basketball landed four-star big Aliou Dioum from Bella Vista Prep after he accepted a scholarship offer in July—he took an official visit on Aug. 30 and averaged 13.6 points and 6.2 rebounds at Peach Jam. Dioum said he trusted the program’s plan to help him grow as a top player.  The Dominion Post
  • West Virginia's defense was strong in three games but Kansas exploited big plays — the team gave up four long scores including a 41-yard touchdown and made mistakes on third downs. Linebacker Reid Carrico said the team would fix the problems after Kansas — planning changes ahead of games against Utah and BYU.  The Dominion Post
