  • Today, the Brownfields Assistance Center at WVU celebrated 20 years of helping local communities clean up old sites and boost public health at its annual conference in Morgantown, and a video released with Marshall University shows how the centers led brownfield redevelopment—securing over $50 million in EPA funds and more than $1 billion in additional investments. The centers have played a key role in driving local economic growth through steady support for redevelopment projects.  West Virginia University

  • That’s So Cute!, a new thrift shop at 440 Spruce St., brings affordable, trendy Y2K clothing to Morgantown—its owners Cabrera and Lang use years of experience from Pittsburgh to meet local demand. The shop held a soft opening in late August and will join the West Virginia Vintage Fest on Sept. 21.  The Daily Athenaeum

ECONOMY NEWS

  • An analysis shows that Mon Power customers paid $10.3 million extra for electricity from the Ohio Valley Electric from 2018 to 2024 while Appalachian power customers overpaid $328 million; the contract, which runs until 2040+ is designed to lock in prices but has raised public anger over rising bills.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University Water Tower will be updated as part of a campus beautification drive that aims to brighten the WVU skyline in the coming months — the planned improvements will refresh this iconic landmark.  WV News
  • WVU students now can use ArcGIS Pro on lab computers or their own devices by signing in with their WVU login—this tool helps create maps and study data for class projects. The software is available through a partnership between the Geology and Geography department, the West Virginia GIS Technical Center and IT Services.  West Virginia University
  • The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at WVU is seeking volunteer instructors for its winter term from Jan. 19 to March 14 — proposals are due by Oct. 6. Faculty, staff and community members with diverse expertise are invited to lead engaging classes for adults 50 and older.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Morgantown firefighters face rising costs and longer wait times for new fire engines as they work to replace older equipment and meet safety needs—trends seen across the country. The department is exploring budget adjustments to address these challenges.  WV News
  • The state Public Service Commission issued an order Wednesday that requires all utilities to have a notification plan for planned and unplanned outages — each utility must file its plan within 30 days. The order, based on a law signed in April, also covers regulated motor carriers to ensure customers get timely updates during service disruptions.  The Dominion Post

  • Isaiah Thompson led the top-ranked Morgantown High to a 48—21 win over Connellsville on Friday night by scoring four touchdowns in a row that turned a tied half into a strong win; he finished with 213 rushing yards on 13 attempts and his play set the stage for a game next week against Spring Mills.  The Dominion Post
  • The Morgantown High School boys' soccer team beat University High School 6-0 on Thursday night—junior Anthony Vessechia scored his first hattrick as the Mohigans improved their record in this long-standing matchup.  The Dominion Post
  • Defensive coordinator Zac Alley met with his team on Monday to shape new defensive plans for Week 4 against Kansas—his creative tactics include 25 ideas aimed at countering Kansas' dual-threat quarterback Jalon Daniels while building on a defense that has earned 13 sacks this season. His approach shows promise as he works to boost the Mountaineers' readiness for the upcoming game.  The Dominion Post
