Good morning, Morgantown. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 18th of September.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • State Farm’s report shows West Virginia remains number one in animal collisions with drivers facing a 1 in 40 chance of hitting an animal—officials urge slowing down near deer-crossing signs during dawn and dusk as the state has led this statistic for over a decade.  WDTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Gallery 304 is hosting the first Vintage Fest downtown this Sunday, September 21, with 20 to 50 vendors offering vintage clothing, antiques and homewares. Additional events are scheduled for October 19 and November 16 and will include special surprises.  Morgantown Magazine
  • The MAC Maker Space opened in June to give the community access to tools for sewing, carving, printing, and painting at a membership rate of $10/day or $60/month. It will soon add a pottery studio — with wheels, a work area, glazes, and a kiln — and classes will start for enrolled students before opening to everyone.  Morgantown Magazine

ECONOMY NEWS

  • West Virginia Public Broadcasting reporter Curtis Tate reported that Appalachian Power customers overpaid $328 million for coal-generated electricity from OVEC plants built in 1955—one near Kyger Creek across the Ohio River and one in Indiana with no local benefits. The Public Service Commission froze rates last month while regulators have not reexamined the costs, leaving concerns about future rate adjustments.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Starting today, WVU faculty, staff and students must use an enrolled backup device—such as a spare phone, tablet or hardware token—to log into systems because Duo Mobile will be retired Oct. 1 and previous backup methods have ended. ITS urges users to obtain a hardware token to avoid work or study disruptions during this change.  West Virginia University
  • Scott Fleming, a WVU alum—Ravenswood native and Elkins resident, was featured as the September Faculty Feature after his research presentation led to a 20-year career at WVU. He now chairs the Department of Accounting in the John Chambers College of Business and Economics and prepares students with hands-on projects for real-world success.  West Virginia University
  • WVU Law started a fall visit program that gives prospective students a firsthand look at law school. The program offers admissions sessions, first-year class observations and student-led tours on Mondays, Tuesdays — and Fridays this semester.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The West Virginia University Board of Governors approved a $4.25 million upgrade for Jackson Lodge today at WVU Jackson’s Mill — a 500-acre event facility in Lewis County. The funds from a charitable gift will pay for new lodging renovations, a visitor center and upgrades to safety, accessibility and technology that have not been done since the lodge was built in 1968.  The Dominion Post
  • On Tuesday, representatives from the West Virginia Secretary of State’s office set up booths across West Virginia, including Morgantown, to help residents register and update their voting information for local and national elections. Senior field representative Lee Dean said the effort reminded citizens that every vote counts—voting is made simple with both electronic and handwritten ballots.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kansas coach Lance Leipold said his defense will try to slow West Virginia's fast-paced offense—averaging a play every 19.9 seconds and running 90 plays in an overtime win against Pittsburgh last Saturday—as the team prepares for the contest. KU plans to use rigorous drills to boost communication and reaction on the field in order to match West Virginia's rapid style.  The Dominion Post
  • Rich Rodriguez supports a new proposal to change the transfer portal window to one ten-day period in January instead of two separate periods. The rule must be approved by Oct. 1—if approved, it will help teams organize player transfers better.  The Dominion Post
  • Clay Ash, an underdog walk-on from Virginia who built his skills at IMG Academy, played a key role in WVU’s comeback against Pitt by catching four passes including a big 15-yard play and making effective rushes. He said his unusual journey and hard work have prepared him for a bigger role in the offense as he steps into more responsibility in upcoming games—he remains grateful for the chance to prove himself.  The Dominion Post
  • The Mountaineers beat the Panthers in overtime last Saturday at Milan Puskar Stadium and fans cheered their win in the 108th meeting between these rivals—neither team will meet again until 2029. The team now prepares for their next game on Saturday in Lawrence, KS as fan hope grows for a strong season.  WDTV
  • The University High School girls’ soccer team and Morgantown battled to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night at Pony Lewis Field as MHS senior Ella Miller scored five minutes into the second half and UHS freshman Lauren Goodenow equalized five minutes later—both teams will play on Saturday with Morgantown set to face Musselman at 1:00 p.m. and UHS scheduled to visit Buckhannon-Upshur at 11:00 a.m.  The Dominion Post
