COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local high schoolers cleaned headstones on September 11 in remembrance of 9/11—demonstrating respect for a lasting memorial tradition.  WDTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The WVU IT Purchase Request form was updated on Sept. 11 to automate low-risk technology purchases—this update collects better information and now requires a VPAT to show web-based software meets federal accessibility standards. Requests submitted before Sept. 4 will be processed under the old workflow.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Patrick Morrisey signed two bills Thursday afternoon at the Puskar Center that set up rules for college athletes to earn money from their name—image—likeness and allow schools like WVU and Marshall to form nonprofits to manage revenue while protecting athletes from conflicts with endorsements such as alcohol and tobacco. The new laws give colleges a way to share funds with athletes and boost competitiveness in college sports.  MetroNews
  • Today, the Morgantown Utility Board approved over $5 million in task orders for 10 water system projects—covering automated meter reading, a Mon Boulevard main replacement, telemetry upgrades, and tank improvements—while planning further design work and financing for a total estimated cost of about $64 million. The board will work with Strand Associates to complete the engineering and design needed before construction begins.  The Dominion Post

  • WVU faculty and staff are encouraged to use the FSAP, which offers three free counseling sessions, referrals to community mental health providers, and check-ins to reduce workplace stress. The program also hosts quarterly book clubs, holiday stress consultations, and seasonal support groups—providing extra ways to boost mental wellness.  West Virginia University

SPORTS NEWS

  • WVU and Marshall will try to bounce back tomorrow from Week 2 losses as both teams prepare for their games in Morgantown — with MEC contests, high school football and college soccer games set for the weekend.  MetroNews
  • Saturday is the 108th Backyard Brawl between Pitt and West Virginia, but after this season the rivalry will be postponed until 2029 because scheduling conflicts with home games and other matchups made extending it difficult. Both schools discussed extending the contest, and future games are already set for 2030 and 2032 — a sign they want to keep the rivalry alive.  The Dominion Post
