  • WVU research assistant professor Yihong Li started Tottico—a company that makes all its clothes locally—and will pitch her business at The Tank Entrepreneur Pitch Contest on Nov. 12 in Clarksburg; the contest offers $10,000 and over $30,000 in guidance and services while Tottico is part of WVU’s Vantage Ventures program and plans to launch a limited-edition beanie collection this winter.  The Dominion Post

CRIME NEWS

  • St. Francis Central Catholic School was placed on a precautionary lockdown Tuesday morning after a report of a person with a weapon on Grafton Road—officials say no threat was posed to students, and the incident ended when the suspect was detained and taken for a medical evaluation.  WDTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • West Virginia schools must now display 'In God We Trust' on durable posters because Senate Bill 280 took effect, as announced by Governor Patrick Morrisey and lawmakers at a press conference; over 700 schools will show the signs and no funding was provided—Patriot Mobile spent $10,000 to print them.  WDTV
  • On Sept. 8, WVU's Faculty Senate met where University President Michael Benson addressed concerns over AI misuse and research funding while interim provost Paul Kreider outlined administrative changes including the ongoing search for a permanent dean for the School of Law. Benson also noted improved fall enrollment and deferred maintenance priorities—faculty are set to meet again on Oct. 13 to follow up on these issues.  The Daily Athenaeum
  • Revised projections show the 2026-27 Hope Scholarship program will cost just under $245 million—about $70 million less than expected as the number of newly eligible students dropped from roughly 54,000 to 43,000.   • Staff Council has partnered with the university since 1986—now inviting employees to apply for the WVU Staff Council Scholarship for Spring 2026, with applications due Nov. 1.  West Virginia University

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers are testing a new telehealth method to study babies' movements—eligible babies aged 2-4 months with internet access take part from home using a secure Zoom call and online surveys. Parents who finish the study will receive a $50 gift card and the research has been approved by WVU's review board.  West Virginia University
