CRIME NEWS

  • A Maryland man — Arnold Johnson, III, 21 — who turned himself in after a 2024 shooting at Mountain Valley Apartments in Monongalia County was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of Rashad Alton this past week.  WDTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Located beneath the Metropolitan Theatre at 371 High Street, the Metropolitan Billiard Parlor—known as the Met—has been a part of Morgantown since 1924 and celebrated its 100th anniversary last year by keeping its original pool tables and vintage decor. Current owners Chris Evans and Steve Dilettoso have made subtle improvements while preserving its historic charm, and the venue welcomes visitors Monday through Wednesday from 5 to 11 p.m., Thursday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to midnight, and Sundays from 2 to 11 p.m.  The Dominion Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Research Office has named David Satterfield interim associate vice president to oversee the Office of Innovation and Commercialization, Regional Research Institute, Water Research Institute, and Institute of Sustainability and Energy Research—he also will continue his work as director of asset development to build ties with local businesses. Interim VP Ming Lei praised his leadership while noting that roles are being adjusted as the office searches for a permanent associate vice president.  West Virginia University
  • State official Sonya White said at a Monday meeting that nearly 6% fewer kindergarteners needed extra help by the end of last year than at the start, even as winter snow closures delayed some tests. Lawmakers are now discussing plans to retain between 2000 and 3000 third graders next school year — the Department of Education will soon finalize guidance on retention.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • WVU volunteers helped students and parents recycle 14 tons of cardboard during move-in weekend. The annual event is part of the campus sustainability effort + it aims to boost the diversion rate to 50% by fiscal year 2035.  West Virginia University

HEALTH NEWS

  • Operators of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline said that people in distress can call or text 988 for help. Monday was the second annual 988 Day to increase awareness of the service, which received over 30,000 contacts across West Virginia—counselors listened closely to each caller.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

SPORTS NEWS

  • A large crowd gathered Monday afternoon at Mylan Park as the community dropped the first puck at the 48,000-square-foot Hope Gas Ice Pavilion — a $15 million facility built by the Hazel Ruby McQuain Charitable Trust to serve as home for WVU Hockey and the Morgantown Hockey Association. Future plans include learn-to-skate programs and a possible second rink if community demand grows.  The Dominion Post
