COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Morgantown will host its first 9/11 veterans and first responders resource fair at the Morgantown Armory from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 11—organized by Valley HealthCare System, the free event will honor local heroes with an 11 a.m. flag ceremony, interactive service booths, and family activities including a bald eagle presentation.  The Dominion Post
  • Morgantown started its Urban Archery Deer Hunt 15 years ago when surveys showed too many deer were causing accidents and damage, and the program has grown into a volunteer effort that manages deer on public and private lands. Today, local hunters follow strict safety rules and donate venison to food pantries — a community action that reduces property loss.  The Dominion Post
  • The Morgantown Police Department launched its annual 'Beard It Up' campaign, where officers will grow beards from September 4th to December 31st and donate $25 a month to support pediatric cancer research through The Cure Starts Now Foundation—Lieutenant Jason Ammons leads the effort.  WDTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Morgantown native Courtney Bearer, a West Virginia University graduate, is competing in the Miss America pageant this week in Orlando and is doing her hair and makeup naturally — she hopes to win the title and a $50,000 college scholarship to help her future education.  WDTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Honors College is accepting applications—due by Nov. 7—from all full-time Morgantown Campus faculty for the 2026-27 cohort of Honors Faculty Fellows, where selected fellows will teach one or two sections to bring their expertise to students.  West Virginia University
  • Rebekah Dunaway received the Outstanding New Faculty Adviser Award for her creative, student-centered advising approach in social work at WVU—while the Statler College Advising Center earned the Outstanding Advising Program Award for its tailored guidance that has boosted retention and graduation rates. Both awards mark the first national honors for WVU in these categories and will be recognized at NACADA’s conference in Las Vegas in October.  West Virginia University
