CULTURE NEWS

  • In a feature published yesterday, Morgantown’s Mon Valley Mushrooms shaped views on fungi at its indoor farm—changing how locals see this natural resource.  West Virginia University
  • The annual WV Wine and Jazz Festival will be held Sept. 6-7 at Ruby Amphitheater at Hazel McQuain Park and will offer live music by WVU Jazz Ensemble 1 and the faculty ensemble—featuring West Virginia wines, local food vendors, and proceeds that support campus and community programs. Tickets cost $25 and include a wine tasting for those 21 and older.  The Daily Athenaeum
  • The West Virginia Botanic Garden opened Café Rosé in June and now offers window service on Thursdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.—the final part of its plan to enhance the visitor experience. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Representatives from the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond discussed boosting rural economic development at a forum held on Wednesday at the WVU Erickson Alumni Center—panel members stressed that collaboration was vital to address a 44 percent rural unemployment rate and advance workforce development.  MetroNews

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Career Services has announced a fall series of career fairs and professional programs to connect students and alumni with top employers offering internships and full-time jobs—events include free headshots, mock interviews, and discount suit shopping. The schedule runs from Sept. 7 to Sept. 26 and some campus parking lots will be closed on select days.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officers across West Virginia have started a high visibility enforcement period today that will run until September 21—aiming to catch speeding drivers and lower crashes and fatalities.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting
  • West Virginia Secretary of State Kris Warner visited WDTV Thursday to stress the need for voter registration—she urged residents to register and learn about candidates as local elections can be decided by just a few votes. Her remarks came during National Voter Registration Month to help prepare the community for upcoming elections.  WDTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Medical experts discussed vaccine rules as court cases in Raleigh, Gilmer and Berkeley counties examine religious exemptions. Retired Dr. James McJunkins recalled using iron lungs during a polio outbreak and Dr. Lisa Costello said only medical exemptions should be allowed to keep kids safe—schools must follow these guidelines.  MetroNews

SPORTS NEWS

  • A first‐half goal from Tiago Campos led No. 13 Gardner-Webb to defeat WVU 1-0 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, snapping the Mountaineers’ 32-match home unbeaten streak. Gardner-Webb also earned its first win over a top‐10 opponent—achieving a historic milestone in program history.  The Dominion Post
  • Morgantown High senior wide receiver Jayden Smalls had a standout performance in Week 1—he caught four passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns in a 44-7 win over Parkersburg.
