EDUCATION NEWS

  • Since August 11, Wisdom Academy has been in session at its new facility on South High Street where a former county schools building was transformed into 14 classrooms for 50 K-6 students, and the school arranged staggered start and dismissal times with Morgantown High to ease traffic.  MetroNews
  • On this date in 1867, WVU opened its first term with 119 undergraduates paying $8 for 13 weeks and $3.50 per week for room and board—students studied in just two buildings, lacked modern dorm amenities, and were all male.  MetroNews

FINANCE NEWS

  • A Morgantown resident won a $50,000 prize on a Powerball ticket that matched four numbers and the Powerball at Cheat Lake Price Cutter on Venture Drive— the jackpot remains unclaimed at an estimated $498.4 million cash value. Officials noted that although the overall jackpot has reached over $1 billion in total value— no one has yet won the top prize.  WDTV

  • MICA organized a protest in front of WVU Coliseum on Sep 1, 2025 as part of the national Workers Over Billionaires effort—calling for worker rights to be prioritized.  WDTV
  • UMWA President Cecil Roberts, who has led the union for 30 years, will retire this fall after the special convention in St. Louis. He said he will support his successor Brian Sanson while warning that mine work has become more dangerous due to slow safety rule changes + he remains active in union and veteran causes.  MetroNews

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cam Vaughn became WVU’s top receiver in his debut—he caught seven passes for 127 yards and a 46‐yard touchdown against Robert Morris. Previously signed by Rich Rodriguez as a quarterback at Jacksonville State, the redshirt sophomore now uses his past experience to read defenses and build trust with his quarterback.  The Dominion Post
  • University High running back Brody Kehler scored five touchdowns — four rushing and one on a 65-yard interception return — in a 40-21 win over Musselman on Friday night, and he will build on his strong start as his team prepares to face Parkersburg South soon.  The Dominion Post
