CRIME NEWS

  • Jonathan Ramirez was sentenced to life in prison without parole by Monongalia County Circuit Court for fatally stabbing Jacob Patrick Lough at his Morgantown home in early 2024—four days of testimony detailed the brutal attack.  The Dominion Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The WVU Mountaineer Marching Band held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Pride Practice Facility from 4-4:30 p.m. on Aug. 29 at the Med Fields next to Mountaineer Station. University President Michael T. Benson attended the event to celebrate the completion of Phase 1 with the new turf practice field.  West Virginia University
  • WVU Libraries offers academic resources to help students succeed including workshops, unique study spaces, a digital photography studio, and an Ask a Librarian feature—Kelly Diamond said these tools support student learning. Students can register for workshops and reserve study rooms on the WVU Libraries website.  The Daily Athenaeum

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hope Gas responded to criticism of its proposed PREP rate hikes by submitting rebuttal testimony to the Public Service Commission. Daniel Truman stated that critics’ cost comparisons are invalid due to different installation conditions—he said the company will hire experienced contractors even as some warn that additional base rate increases might hurt producers.  The Dominion Post
  • The Public Service Commission of West Virginia rejected most of a $250.5 million rate increase from Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power Co.—approving only $76.1 million—to limit power cost increases.  WV News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Mountain State Assessment of Trends in Community Health survey will ask West Virginians about their needs—responses will guide resources to improve access to care. Residents can participate online to share their health information.  West Virginia University

SPORTS NEWS

  • Rich Rodriguez is head coach for West Virginia’s football team in their game against Robert Morris today. He has coached at several schools and said his normal nerves help him focus—he looks to bring his team home.  The Dominion Post
  • Today, WVU begins its season with head coach Rich Rodriguez in his first game at Mulan Puskar Stadium against Robert Morris at 2 p.m., with tickets priced at $30—this comes after a season full of changes including Neal Brown’s firing and over 70 player transfers.  The Dominion Post
