CRIME NEWS

  • A false shots fired alert near the Wise Library on WVU's downtown campus in Morgantown occurred at about 7:40 a.m. on August 26 — officials cleared the threat by 8:06 a.m. as police continue investigating the hoax.  MetroNews

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Department of Communication Studies is seeking adult women age 18 and older to join a research study on social media effects. Eligible participants will complete an online survey and then attend a 45-minute session in Field Hall — they will receive a $25 Amazon gift card after finishing the tasks.  West Virginia University
  • Dr. Dave and Becky Swartz, Clarksburg natives, have pledged their entire estate to fund scholarships at WVU—honoring more than 40 years of support from the university. The donation will help provide future students with more educational opportunities.  WV News
  • WVU President Michael Benson announced a slate of new hires and appointees in Morgantown—this change will strengthen the university’s leadership as stated in a recent release.  WV News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Brandonville Solar, a subsidiary of Enel Green Power North America, may build a solar power plant in Bruceton Mills after filing a second notice with the Public Service Commission on Monday. The company said it will submit its full application in 15 to 90 days — the planned facility could produce up to 99.6 megawatts and will connect to Mon Power’s system.  The Dominion Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Patrick Morrisey announced that an independent company, BDO USA, P.C., will audit the Department of Human Services, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Transportation to check state and federal compliance and efficiency. The evaluations will be finished within six months to uncover areas that need improvement in government operations.  WDTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today through August 29, sanitarians from Monongalia County Health Department will distribute over 1,300 sugar-coated rabies vaccine baits in grassy areas across the county — covering local parks and spaces near the WVU Coliseum—while the USDA will drop additional baits from an aircraft mid-September.  WDTV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Rich Rodriguez will coach West Virginia in a football game against Robert Morris on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Milan Puskar Stadium as he begins his second run with 79 new players and a new coaching staff. The team awaits a decision on Jimmori Robinson’s eligibility after the NCAA appealed a temporary restraining order that allowed the other players to practice.  MetroNews
