ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Fire crews from Morgantown, Westover, Star City and Brookhaven responded on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. to a blaze at the Villages at West Run apartment complex on 301 Falcon Run—occurring two days before West Virginia University students return to class—with officials reporting no damage details yet. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to share input at listening sessions for WVU's provost search scheduled from Aug. 29 to Sept. 3 in Morgantown, Beckley and Keyser; on the Morgantown campus, one session will be held in Mountainlair Blue Ballroom on Aug. 29 at 9 a.m. and a student session will be at Vandalia Lounge on Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m. — the Provost Search Committee will use feedback to help Greenwood Asher & Associates vet candidates. - ➤ WVU is offering a workshop series on high-performance computing for faculty and graduate students whose research needs exceed what desktop computers can handle. One online session ran from 10 a.m. to noon on Aug. 18 and additional sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Aug. 21, 25 and 28—this training covers HPC, parallel computing and data science. - ➤ Monongalia County schools start today with a School Safety Officer in every building in a program by the sheriff’s department, county board of education and county commission—these officers, which include state, local and retired federal law enforcement, will patrol the schools and help stop active shooter threats under a new state law. - ➤ Governor Patrick Morrisey announced Monday that over $2.5 million in funding—distributed to 22 programs statewide—will help fight child abuse and sexual assault. Local agencies such as the Monongalia County Child Advocacy Center will use part of the funds to enhance vital support services. WDTV
- ➤ The American Civil Liberties Union and Mountain State Justice refiled a lawsuit to block Governor Morrisey's vaccine exemption order as schools reopen this week — they say the order weakens state vaccine rules — to keep current immunization standards. The suit asks a court for a temporary restraining order — to stop the policy that lets parents opt out of required shots — while the case is pending. WDTV
