CULTURE NEWS

  • West Virginia University's annual FallFest—featuring singer-songwriter Sierra Ferrell—will be held on Monday at the Rec Center Fields.  WV News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The West Virginia Department of Tourism has released its forecast map for fall foliage—above-average summer rain and a mix of warm days and cool nights are expected to bring bright reds, oranges and yellows to the hills. The department will introduce weekly travel plans and a live leaf tracker starting mid-September to help visitors plan trips.  WDTV
  • The West Virginia Department of Tourism released a fall foliage projection map with the West Virginia Division of Forestry to help travelers plan their trips and enjoy a vibrant autumn season — the map shows where the brightest colors are expected.  WV News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local law enforcement is joining the Governor’s Highway Safety Program and the U.S. Department of Transportation in a campaign to stop drug-impaired driving. The campaign 'If You Feel Different, You Drive Different. Drive High, Get a DUI' began on August 15 and will run until September 1—officials say that drug use can slow reaction times and put lives at risk.  WDTV
  • West Virginia Attorney General McCuskey and 37 other AGs sent a letter to Instagram to address public safety and privacy concerns caused by its new location-sharing feature that shows users’ exact positions on a map—especially for vulnerable groups. They asked for restrictions that prevent minors from using the feature and for clear alerts and controls for adults.  WDTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A federal judge ruled in favor of two coal miners who sued for black lung benefits by ordering Health and Human Services to restore the Coal Worker Health Surveillance Program—its mobile clinic visited Morgantown earlier this month and is set to serve other areas later but will not reach the region with the highest new cases.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

  • WVU women’s soccer lost 1-0 to No. 15 Virginia at Dick Dlesk Stadium on Thursday after a corner kick deflected in the 64th minute, and coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said the team missed key scoring chances. She noted the Mountaineers took 14 shots and had seven corner kicks—details that point to areas needing improvement.  The Dominion Post
