CRIME NEWS

  • A probationary member of the local volunteer fire department was arrested on arson charges—authorities continue investigating the incident.  WDTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • West Virginia public school students improved in English, math, and science as the 2024-2025 assessment data show a 3% rise in English, a 2% increase in math and a 1% gain in science. Officials credit the improvements to local efforts+ support from the Third Grade Success Act.  WDTV
  • Faculty and graduate students who need more than desktop resources can attend an 'Introduction to High-Performance Computing' workshop series at WVU HPC Clusters—online sessions will run from 10 a.m. to noon on Aug. 18, 21, 25 and 28 and cover topics in parallel computing and data science.  West Virginia University
  • WVU announced that drivers must update their license plate info in the Parking Portal by Sept.1—this new system uses cameras on patrol vehicles to check that cars have permits or have paid for parking. Vehicles with only rear plates must park with the front facing the space to avoid citations starting Sept.2.  WDTV
  • The West Virginia Board of Education sent a letter to the Professional Charter School Board reminding it to follow state vaccination laws after it suggested allowing religious exemptions last week. The board said charter schools must follow the same rules as public schools + ensuring they comply with state law.  WDTV
  • West Virginia University is redesigning teacher training with new online pathways and local partnerships—efforts aimed at easing the teacher shortage in our schools. The programs help teachers finish advanced certifications while staying close to home and strengthening community ties.  WVU Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Patrick Morrisey announced in Fairmont yesterday that nearly $5 million was granted to fund water and sewer projects across West Virginia. The $3.4 million from the IJDC and $1.34 million from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund supported upgrades and repairs in towns like Cairo, the Olcott area, Elk Valley, Paw Paw and Anmore — projects Morrisey said were critical for clean water and safe sewers.  MetroNews

  • Rich Rodriguez returned to Milan Puskar Stadium on August 14 when season tickets were offered with a faculty and staff discount. Mobile passes sold out+ traditional season tickets remain available while supplies last.  West Virginia University
