ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The West Virginia Grant Resources Center has secured over $44 million in funds for local clients since launching in January 2023, with more than $14 million awarded in 2024 for projects like job creation and outdoor recreation. Marshall University and WVU co-founded the center—led by Liz Vitullo and Sara Payne Scarbro—to also train students in grant writing and bring university expertise to community projects. - ➤ WVU researchers find that poor air quality is linked to increased school absences—young and minority students are hit hardest, potentially causing 54,000 students nationwide to miss weeks of class. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Drivers parking in University lots must update their license plate information on the WVU Parking Portal by Sept. 1 to meet new parking rules. The Parking Management team has implemented a License Plate Recognition system—using cameras on patrol vehicles—to confirm vehicles have permits or paid for short-term parking, and drivers with rear-only plates must park with the front facing the space. - ➤ The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission approved a rule on Friday that lets student athletes be paid for their NIL if they avoid using school logos or uniforms—ensuring they keep their amateur status—and parents or athletes are advised to contact the director with any questions. - ➤ West Virginia became the 44th state to allow youth athletes to earn income from their name, image and likeness on August 8. Wayne Ryan explained that the policy permits earnings solely from an athlete’s own image while prohibiting benefits from school ties—officials will monitor the rule and adjust it if transfer or eligibility issues arise.
