ECONOMY NEWS

  • In 2024, the West Virginia Grant Resource Centers secured over $14.7 million in grant awards to fund community, infrastructure, and workforce projects statewide—an initiative led by West Virginia University and Marshall University that also provided more than 1,400 training sessions and sustained 145 jobs across the state.  West Virginia University

  • WVU is refreshing its brand identity by replacing its longtime 'Mountaineers Go First' tagline with 'Let's Go!'—updated colors, fonts, and campus signage highlight its commitment to tradition and a forward-looking vision.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • West Virginia ended its last fiscal year with a surplus of $338.5 million and started the new year strong by collecting $388 million in July, 15.8% more than last year. State officials said much of the surplus is already planned for projects like secondary road maintenance — the state still faces challenges — from rising insurance and education costs.  MetroNews
  • Motorists traveling southbound on Interstate 79 who plan to take Interstate 68 early next week must use an alternate route because overnight bridge work is scheduled Monday through Wednesday — work is taking place at the split in Monongalia County.  WV News

HEALTH NEWS

  • WVU Medicine Thomas Hospital held an event on Friday to urge people to register as organ donors since 500 West Virginians were waiting for a transplant. Nurses stressed the need to discuss donation wishes with family—reminding residents that registration can be completed at DMVs or through DonateLifeWV.  MetroNews
  • A raccoon in the New Hill community near Meadow Ponds tested positive for rabies after biting someone on Thursday—Monongalia County Health Department officials now urge residents to have their pets up to date on vaccines and to report any animals acting strangely.  WDTV

SPORTS NEWS

  • West Virginia and Duke will face off in a non-conference women's basketball matchup on Nov. 14 at Colonial Hall of the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs — the game is part of the Greenbrier Tip-Off event. MAC members will get a ticket presale link on August 20 while the public sale begins on August 21 — the tipoff time remains to be announced.  West Virginia University
