COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ron Wenig and fellow first responders met with Lee Saffel at the Education Center for Mon EMS in Westover during a Lifesaver Award ceremony held this past Wednesday to honor their work saving him when he suffered a heart attack six months ago—Saffel gave heartfelt thanks for the timely help from his son Eli who performed CPR until hospital care arrived.  The Dominion Post

CRIME NEWS

  • Preston County police arrested 35-year-old Shane Sager of Terra Alta after his mother reported he attempted to kill her by choking her until she passed out—he now faces charges of strangulation, domestic battery, battery on an officer and assault on an officer.  WDTV
  • Curtis Batton, 38, was arrested in Granville after police responded to a disturbance call and found him allegedly strangling a woman—hospital exam confirmed the victim sustained a closed head injury and bruises.  WDTV
  • A former teacher at FCI Gilmer pleaded guilty to smuggling methamphetamine into the prison for an inmate in exchange for $4,000 during a three-month period in 2024—she faces up to 20 years in federal prison as sentencing is pending.  WDTV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A report by the Ohio River Valley Institute says that counties in Appalachia with a fracking boom lost jobs and people even though gas production raised local money. Only Monongalia County grew in jobs and income since 2008—maybe because of West Virginia University.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Registration is open for the Mountain State Conference on Disabilities, which will be held Sept. 18th—19th at the Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place. The event will feature discussions on best practices to support people with disabilities and is open to professionals, students, and caregivers.  West Virginia University
  • The new MyWVU Portal will launch in early September for undergraduate and graduate applicants for Spring 2026 while Enrollment Management hosts over 20 training sessions to help staff learn the new system—today, students can still apply using the Common Application. Starting Aug. 25, applicants will use the new Blackthorn tool to register for campus tours and admissions events scheduled for November 1 or later—this change gives the university a modern, unified event management platform.  West Virginia University

SPORTS NEWS

  • Coach Rich Rodriguez said his 2025 Mountaineers will use low sportsbook odds and mixed preseason polls as motivation—he noted that a team built on over 70 new transfer players with an uncertain starting quarterback must rely on rigorous training to win Big 12 games. Local fans in Morgantown remain confident in Rodriguez and see his leadership as key to overcoming outside criticism.  The Dominion Post
  • Today, head coach Rich Rodriguez began fall camp at the Milan Puskar Center where he is evaluating five quarterbacks including Nicco Marchiol, Jaylen Henderson, Max Brown, Khalil Wilkins, and Scotty Fox, Jr. He said he will announce the starter when the team plays Robert Morris on Aug 30 at 2:30 p.m. & plans to increase live contact in practice next week.  West Virginia University
