COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Main Street Morgantown will host an Arts Walk on August 9 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on High Street to celebrate the end of summer and back-to-school shopping, and local artists must apply by 5 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 3) to join the event.  West Virginia University
  • Drivers who use College Avenue near WVU’s Mountainlair in Morgantown may experience delays this week—local officials advise using alternate routes.  WV News

CRIME NEWS

  • Morgan County Sheriff Johnnie Walter said that deputies saved a woman and her child on Saturday morning when they responded to a break-in call at a home east of Berkeley Springs as suspect Melvin Gallion fired a shotgun that injured Deputy Bradley Mechem — who will need surgery to remove the pellets — and Gallion now faces charges of attempted murder and malicious wounding while held on $350,000 bail.  MetroNews

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The state offers a back-to-school sales tax holiday from Aug. 1 to Aug. 4 that exempts qualifying purchases from sales tax. Items must meet set price limits such as less than $500 for laptops and tablets — less than $150 for sports equipment and less than $125 for clothing items.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Starting Thursday, July 31 after 11:30 p.m., mobile devices joining the WVU.Encrypted or eduroam networks will need to install a new DigiCert certificate — ITS will update the network from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on July 31 and Wi‑Fi service may be affected.  West Virginia University
  • West Virginia University supporters gave $260.7 million last fiscal year, making it the university's third highest year of giving and funding education, health care and research statewide—boosting opportunities for students, faculty and staff. Over 22,000 donors, including 8,871 alumni, contributed gifts that set a new benchmark for future support.  WVU Today

  • WVU football training camp begins tomorrow (July 30) in Morgantown as coach Rich Rodriguez and his new staff work to choose a starting quarterback among Nicco Marchiol, Jaylen Henderson, and Max Brown before the season opener on Aug. 30 against Robert Morris.
