EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ WVU announced that WVURC employees will move to direct University employment effective Oct 31 to better align research with the University’s mission. The change will streamline administrative processes and improve benefits without altering current duties, as employees were informed on July 23. West Virginia University
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Office of Sustainability set over 20 goals for WVU to achieve by 2035 that focus on reducing waste, conserving land and water and cutting emissions - the plan targets a 50% reduction in single-use plastics and boosts recycling, with energy efficiency improvements led by third-party recommendations from Siemens. The strategy builds on past successes and aligns with WVU’s responsibility as a large research institution working to lower its environmental impact. The Daily Athenaeum

- ➤ The Carruth Center promoted summer events to boost student mental health and self-care—offering bike rides with free rentals and counseling, unplug workshops, and a book club where the first 10 students received a free copy of Remarkably Bright Creatures. It held a movie screening on July 23 with counselor-led mental health discussions and provided virtual sessions for incoming students along with summer hours from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Daily Athenaeum
- ➤ Morgantown Mutual Aid recorded a recent spike in opioid overdoses and health educator Wesley Thomas at WELLWVU said substance use is common on college campuses—he urged students to use safety resources such as free naloxone and fentanyl test strips—to help keep safe. The Daily Athenaeum
- ➤ In May, a federal judge ordered the mobile black lung screening program to resume, and the mobile clinic restarted service last week in Waynesburg after sitting behind the NIOSH office in Morgantown—next it will visit Mylan Park from July 29 to 31 to offer free screenings that include a chest X-ray, lung function test, and blood pressure check.
