- ➤ Recent WVU updates showed a College of Law student using his Marine Corps and Red Cross experience to build a partnership on International Humanitarian Law while engineers tested a fuel cell that can both store and produce power—Elior Collegiate Dining began new campus services as WVU closed on July 3 for a state holiday and announced leadership, student awards, flood relief efforts and a microplastics study in Appalachian streams. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, as summer spreads in Morgantown, the Avian Conservation Center of Appalachia urges locals to leave healthy baby birds alone—fledglings that are meant to learn wing use from their own parents. The center also advises keeping pets indoors to reduce risks and to call only if a bird is truly injured. The Dominion Post
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ West Virginia's Department of Human Services has opened the annual back-to-school clothing program for families in need; applications opened July 7 and must be submitted by July 31. Eligible families with children in state schools who meet income limits will receive $200 per child via electronic benefit transfer—and foster care families will receive a check. - ➤ The West Virginia State Police will start a high-visibility speeding initiative on Friday that runs through Sunday, July 27th—urging drivers to slow down to keep all road users safe. Officials warn that speeding endangers passengers, pedestrians, and bicyclists and expect drivers to obey posted limits at all times. WDTV
- ➤ Governor Patrick Morrisey appointed William 'Bill' Bell on Monday to fill the vacancy in the 8th House District — representing parts of Doddridge, Tyler and Wetzel counties. Bell, a Wetzel County social studies teacher and adjunct at WVU Parkersburg, will serve in his new role — following David Kelly’s appointment as commissioner of the state Division of Rehabilitation in early June. - ➤ Starting July 11, utilities must develop a plan that details how customers will be notified about planned or unexpected outages—these plans will include an estimated timeline for service restoration and must be approved by the Public Service Commission. WDTV

- ➤ Morgantown High School lacrosse players Ayden Shepard and Jerrod Thompson were named 2025 USA Lacrosse High School All-Americans last week for their key roles in a state championship win—Shepard, a Wheeling signee, scored 79 goals and 25 assists while Thompson led the defense with 32 takeaways.
