- ➤ Rusty Hutson, the new chairman of the WVU Board of Governors, said the board will work openly with incoming president Michael T. Benson to strengthen the university after a law removed voting rights from faculty, staff and students and criticism arose over a closed presidential search process. He said more open board sessions will be planned as the university prepares for former president Gordon Gee’s retirement on July 14 — stressing the need for a transparent process in addressing higher education challenges. - ➤ GameChanger, a statewide prevention education program (started in 2018), has received $310,000 from opioid settlement funds to support substance misuse lessons in schools. Experts doubt its research-based curriculum and measurable outcomes as it works to have a chapter in every school by the 2026 to 2027 school year. MetroNews

- ➤ NASA’s Fairmont facility named after Katherine Johnson faces a severe funding cut from $43.3 million to $13.8 million in the next fiscal year, as proposed budget changes may drastically reduce its support. West Virginia lawmakers are working to block the reduction – they want to protect the jobs and mission at the facility – while NASA prepares responses to questions about the impact. The Dominion Post
- ➤ The state will have a full-time Dementia Services Director starting Friday, July 11 — the law adds the role to the Alzheimer’s Special Care Standards Act to coordinate state services for families living with dementia. Kanawha County Delegate Walter Hall sponsored the law to help ensure better support for those affected. MetroNews
