COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A community meeting in Morgantown discussed the new sober living home at 201 Waitman St in South Park as neighbors, city officials, and recovery advocates debated issues like overcrowding and historic preservation — city staff then distributed comment forms for further input.  The Dominion Post

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Between May 2024 and May 2025, West Virginia lost roughly 9,400 full-time jobs as the total dipped from 726,400 to 717,000 — the largest drop in nonfarm employment among all states. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that while most states added jobs, only Iowa, Maine, and D.C. also saw declines.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

EDUCATION NEWS

  • West Virginia Public Broadcasting today announced the winners of the PBS KIDS Writers Contest by selecting three winning stories — 'Pickle Pete 2: A Curious Quest,' 'Total Solar Eclipse,' and 'Cabby’s Great Adventure.' The contest invites West Virginia students in grades K-5 to submit creative stories as part of this Reader’s Choice Awards program.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting
  • Faculty and staff at WVU are invited to host a hands-on exhibit at the State Fair of West Virginia in Fairlea, where the WVU Building will serve as a hub for STEM experiments, health and nutrition activities, and academic program displays. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Monongalia County Commission is finalizing a lease to move the recycling drop-off site to a dedicated area in the Morgantown Industrial Park, where cameras will be installed and fines imposed for contamination and dumping. Commissioner Tom Bloom said the change from the Westover City Hall parking lot will happen in mid-to-late July — a move designed to secure a lasting recycling program — while operating hours will remain from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.  The Dominion Post

SPORTS NEWS

  • West Virginia University finished 42nd in the final Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, marking the fifth-best finish in school history and its best since a 40th-place finish in 2010-11—nine spots higher than last year’s showing. The Mountaineers also ranked as the sixth-highest Big 12 school in the standings.  West Virginia University
  • Javon Small was drafted as the 48th pick by the Memphis Grizzlies after an impressive season at West Virginia—his family celebrated his memorable NBA moment. He will likely sign a two-way contract and join the summer league on July 5 as he begins his pro career.  The Dominion Post
  • WVU Athletics released its fall football promotional schedule for home games at Milan Puskar Stadium, listing special events like Gold Rush at Robert Morris on Aug. 30, Stripe the Stadium at Pitt on Sept. 13, Hall of Fame Weekend at Utah on Sept. 27, Homecoming at TCU on Oct. 25, Military Appreciation at Colorado on Nov. 8 and Senior Day at Texas Tech on Nov. 29—details for throwback uniforms at Coal Rush and True Blue games will be announced later.  West Virginia University
