  • Mountaineer Food Bank received a $40,000 grant from EQT Foundation — the funds will support its Mobile Pantry Program and help expand food assistance to more families.  WV News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new law giving teachers more authority over discipline in public schools will take effect on July 2. Governor Patrick Morrisey said the measure strengthens classroom control — allowing teachers to manage student behavior from arrival until dismissal while maintaining a ban on corporal punishment.  WDTV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mack Frantz from the WVDNR said local wildlife adapts to floods by finding higher ground or safe shelter — a way to protect themselves from natural disturbances. He said many animals, like groundhogs and deer, change habits and feed at cooler times—actions that help them handle the intense heat.  The Dominion Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Del. Evan Hansen called for Del. Ian Masters to resign after Masters was linked to an anti-Semitic Instagram comment posted from his personal account in April. Legislative leaders are investigating the matter — Masters denies making the post and says a bad actor hacked his account.  MetroNews
  • The West Virginia Department of Human Services received USDA approval on Thursday to extend the 10-day reporting period for SNAP replacement benefits lost due to flooding — the change gives affected families more time to report their losses.  WV News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Guard Javon Small was picked by the Memphis Grizzlies with the 48th pick after a strong season at WVU — he is the first player from the school drafted since 2021.  MetroNews
  • WVU baseball head coach Steve Sabins was named the 2025 ABCA East Region Coach of the Year by ATEC Sports. In his first season he led the team to a 44-16 record—earning the first outright Big 12 regular season title—and they reached a second consecutive NCAA Super Regional.  West Virginia University
