COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The American Red Cross opened three service centers Tuesday to help flood victims in Triadelphia and Fairmont—caseworkers were available from noon to 6 p.m. to provide referrals and recovery planning, and the centers will serve the community through Friday.  MetroNews

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On July 1, Ming Lei, senior associate vice president at the WVU Health Sciences Center, will assume the role of interim vice president at the WVU Research Office as Fred King steps down — Lei plans to lead teams that oversee research protections, conflicts of interest and innovation.  West Virginia University
  • The Daily Athenaeum will be inserted in The Charleston Gazette-Mail starting in August and will be available on Thursdays instead of Wednesdays, a change that is expected to boost circulation across the state—Student Media director Madison Cook said the shift follows a move from Morgantown to Wheeling and honors the late Doug Skaff’s legacy in supporting student journalism.  The Daily Athenaeum

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The state Department of Environmental Protection is monitoring overflow at the Richard Mine Acid Mine Drainage Treatment Facility along Deckers Creek near Morgantown after heavy rain from the Father’s Day storms. DEP officials said the extra rain pushed water into mine voids — causing an overflow of about 300 to 400 gallons per minute — and they will keep watching the facility to decide if upgrades are needed.  MetroNews

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • West Virginia has secured nearly $100 million in federal funds to improve water and sewer systems—officials said the money will help maintain clean water for local communities.  WV News
  • Hospital CEOs from across West Virginia traveled to Washington, D.C. on June 24 to urge federal officials to protect Medicaid funding — the West Virginia Hospital Association said the move is vital to secure patient care.  WV News

SPORTS NEWS

  • West Virginia University baseball finished its season ranked in all major polls, with placements such as 12th by the NCBWA and 17th by USA Today, and set a record with 44 wins while winning its first outright Big 12 regular season title. The team reached the NCAA Super Regionals before losing to LSU—marking the first time in 61 years that consecutive seasons ended with national rankings.  West Virginia University
  • At the 2025 NACMA Convention in Orlando, the WVU Athletics marketing team earned three awards for its Coal Rush game day promotion, revenue increase and lead generation campaign — the recognition highlights its effort to build the Mountaineer brand. West Virginia Brand and Trademark Licensing also received awards for its Built on Bravery Collection and an effective campaign to boost brand awareness.  West Virginia University
