Good morning, Morgantown. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 22nd of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Continual rains over Father’s Day weekend caused severe flooding at Westover City Park, leaving baseball fields turned into a pond and bleachers floating—officials closed the park until damage is assessed and repairs begin for rescheduled games.  The Dominion Post
  • Stewartstown residents met Saturday at the community building to learn about and discuss the 105-mile MARL transmission project, which may lower property values, raise electric bills, and lead to eminent domain on private land. Speakers explained that as NextEra Energy will file for state approval in early fall, additional meetings—such as one scheduled for June 29 at Rexroad Auction in Bruceton Mills—may influence the final route+ response efforts.  The Dominion Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state Economic Development Department’s $9 million federal grant for its digital equity program ended on May 9 with nearly $8.79 million saved, and both Gov. Morrisey and the department left questions unanswered—while on Thursday, Morrisey announced new funding to deploy 362 miles of fiber in 10 counties so high-speed broadband will reach 2,897 locations.  The Dominion Post

  • University beat Nitro 53-48 in the Hope Gas Morgantown Shootout on June 20 at 4:30 p.m.—photos show the score while former MLB pitcher David Carpenter, an East Fairmont and WVU graduate, now manages the Marlins' top affiliate after pitching in 222 games.  MetroNews
  • Morgantown High alum Maddox Bowers played as a holder for Glenville State last fall and now serves as the second-string quarterback as he works every day to be ready in case he is called to lead—he praised the new athletic complex by the football field and the strong team spirit that makes the campus feel like a second home.  The Dominion Post
