Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 21st of June.
Good morning, Morgantown.
On June 19, WVU students joined flood recovery efforts in Wheeling, Fairmont, and Marion County by cleaning up debris and delivering donations after last weekend’s flash flooding destroyed homes and claimed at least eight lives.
The group, led by outreach coordinator Aidan Priest, used a 26-foot truck to transport supplies from Morgantown — including 60 cases of water and rubber gloves donated by WVU Medicine—to those in need.
Dr. Jon Wietholter was named chair of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at WVU School of Pharmacy on June 19 after serving as interim since July 2024—he joined the school in 2008 and is a board-certified pharmacist known for teaching, clinical work and humanitarian aid.
The WVU Child Learning Center, operated by Bright Horizons, offers early education and flexible care for children—including drop-in summer care—with reduced rates for WVU employees and students.
Located near the Evansdale area of campus, the center now has limited availability so families should schedule a visit or call for details.
Graduate students can join a summer support space held every Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Core Arboretum to share experiences on thesis stress, finances, and relationship concerns — registration is required.
The proposed One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed by a narrow House vote may extend 2017 tax cuts while cutting Medicaid benefits for nearly 65,000 West Virginians—experts warn these changes could strain health coverage and economic stability.
State leaders remain divided on whether the bill will spur business investment or harm services for low-income families.
West Virginia University cross country and track and field programs were named No. 9 in the Terry Crawford Program of the Year Award rankings by the USTFCCCA — an honor that underscores the team's success across three championships.
Coach Sean Cleary said the ranking reflects strong finishes in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track events over the past 10 months.
