COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mark Lambert said that the annual Junior Firefighting Camp — hosted by West Virginia State Fire Academy — is drawing teenagers from 34 counties and eight states to Jackson’s Mill this week.  West Virginia University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The WVU Alumni Association is accepting nominations for the 2026 Academy of Distinguished Alumni — an honor for graduates recognized nationally or internationally — and nominations must be submitted online by July 11.  West Virginia University
  • West Virginia University ended its contract with Sodexo because of problems with food quality, cleanliness, and overbilling. The Board voted to cancel the deal for cause and sent a notice on June 16 asking the vendor to leave by month’s end—while the university plans a one-year bridge contract with an undisclosed company.  The Daily Athenaeum
  • The Art Museum of WVU visited West Preston School on May 21 and Mason Dixon Elementary on May 27 to share three museum-related books with students—teaching them about art and museum careers. The project received a $15,000 grant and will bring more books to schools in Marion County during the fall semester.  West Virginia University

  • Morgantown City Council met on Tuesday—council members advanced key ordinances, including a major TIF expansion, and recognized several community initiatives during the meeting.  WV News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Jazzy’s Hydrobikes & Sweet Spot opened a permanent shop at 360 Industrial Avenue in Morgantown this past April and now offers hydrobikes, ice cream, and other treats. The shop plans to hold summer events and add house-made pretzels while continuing to serve favorites like the Oreo Explosion milkshake and Bomb Pop shaved ice.  Morgantown Magazine

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the College Sports Communicators named six WVU student-athletes to the 2025 Academic All-District Teams in men's and women's sports. They will move on to the CSC Academic All-America ballot with the women's selections set for July 8 and the men's for July 9 — a key step in recognizing their achievements.  West Virginia University
  • Ariana Borneo was named West Virginia girls soccer Gatorade Player of the Year after finishing her final season at Morgantown High with 19 goals and 22 assists, announced on Wednesday. The graduate has signed to play at Ashland University after playing with Trinidad — Tobago U-20 and said her team helped shape her career.  The Dominion Post
