COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, June 16, the WVU Police Department advised caution after a black bear was reported near the PRT Central Maintenance Facility at 99 8th Street—officers responded quickly but did not find any bears. Residents are urged to call 911 if they see a bear. West Virginia University
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Faculty and staff are urging undergraduates to submit abstracts for the 18th Annual Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium—scheduled for July 24 at the Mountainlair Ballrooms. The in-person, judged poster session will feature research projects from University and other West Virginia institutions. West Virginia University
- ➤ A drop-in celebration will be held in E. Moore Hall from 2—4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25 to honor Corey Farris as he retires after more than three decades at WVU. Farris has worked at the University since 1991 in roles such as coordinator for New Student Orientation, assistant dean in Residential Education, and director of Housing and University Apartments. - ➤ West Virginia finalized its participation in a $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family Monday—joining 54 other states over concerns that aggressive OxyContin marketing worsened the opioid crisis. The state will receive up to $53 million in accelerated payments over the next nine years to help address the epidemic's impact. West Virginia Public Broadcasting
- ➤ The WVU Board of Governors proposed changes to Employee Leave Rule 3.5 to reduce costs and increase flexibility—proposals include allowing lump sum payouts or terminal leave and transferring annual leave balances from affiliated entities. - ➤ West Virginia Attorney General JB McCuskey announced Monday that all 55 attorneys general from eligible states and territories agreed to a $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma to resolve opioid claims. WV News

- ➤ Graduate nursing students from WVU School of Nursing are working with administrators at WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital—identifying clinical opportunities to improve patient care. They will implement changes that aim to enhance treatment for young patients. WV News

- ➤ Graduate student Sarah Tait of WVU earned her second First Team All-American honor in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday in Eugene, Oregon by setting a personal best of 9:27.80 that broke the Scottish national record by eight seconds + she became only the second Mountaineer to win the honor alongside teammate Ceili McCabe.
