CULTURE NEWS

  • The West Virginia Day Celebration will be held on June 20th at the Exhibition Coal Mine and Youth Museum—offering residents and visitors a day filled with state pride, culture and entertainment.  WV News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A traveling aquarium was parked along Morgantown's rail-trail Wednesday to show local fish and teach residents about water quality. Organized by ORSANCO & the Foundation for Ohio River Education, the event featured educational booths and rock painting for kids before the fish were returned to the Monongahela.  The Dominion Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Verizon and Frontier reached a tentative settlement over Verizon's plan to acquire Frontier Communications service in West Virginia—final details will be presented to the Public Service Commission today at 9:30 a.m.—the agreement is expected to address ongoing land line service issues.  MetroNews
  • Morgantown parks director Melissa Wiles announced her retirement this week after 22 years of service and said she will finish her work in early December. She praised her dedicated staff and long-term fixes to the park system—new projects like the reconfiguration of lower Marilla Park help ensure a lasting legacy—after decades of hard work.  The Dominion Post
  • The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals ruled Wednesday that oil and gas producers cannot deduct post-production costs from royalty payments to mineral owners unless the costs meet set criteria. The divided decision gives mineral owners a legal win — it may affect how royalties are calculated in future contracts.  WV News

SPORTS NEWS

  • WVU announced that three baseball players were named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-East Region team — junior Sam White earned a first team spot while redshirt senior Griffin Kirn and graduate student Jack Kartsonas joined the second team. This is the third straight season that multiple Mountaineers received All-Region honors.  West Virginia University
  • Assistant wide receivers coach Ryan Nehlen ran the Buffalo Marathon and improved his time by 20 minutes to beat the qualifying mark for next year’s Boston Marathon. He said he will plan his training schedule around his football duties under coach Rich Rodriguez as he balances running with coaching.  West Virginia University
  • The Morgantown Post 2 baseball team started its summer schedule with wins over Parkersburg and Clarksburg, scoring nine runs on Saturday and 11 runs in a mercy-shortened contest. The team tallied 22 hits and allowed only two runs in 12 innings, and it will host Napoleon, OH on Thursday+travel to Potomac State this weekend.  The Dominion Post
  • Olympian diver Carson Tyler competed in Thursday's 3-meter prelims at Peak Health Aquatic Center in Morgantown and now prepares to face international divers at the American Cup this weekend. The 21-year-old, a three-time national champion who finished fourth at the Paris Olympics, said his refined routines + determination will help him excel in the finals.  The Dominion Post
