EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Tuesday night’s meeting of the Monongalia County Board of Education, board president Mike Kelly honored 27 retirees—including teachers, administrators, and bus drivers—who together served 788 years, mostly in local schools.  The Dominion Post
  • At Wednesday’s meeting, the West Virginia Board of Education voted unanimously to recommend that county school boards ignore Governor Morrisey’s religious exemption vaccine order—calling on the State Superintendent to issue guidance that aligns with the strict school vaccination law.  WDTV
  • For the second consecutive year, WVU earned the Gallup Exceptional Workplace Award for its Strengths-based campus that boosts growth among students, faculty and staff. The University will be honored today in Washington — a move that shows its focus on building a thriving community.  West Virginia University
  • West Virginia teacher and mother Kacy Harmon uses TikTok to share her life as a teacher and parent—posting teaching tips and parenting advice to promote local pride. She now teaches virtually in Berkeley County after 8 years in the classroom and authored a book that encourages kids to explore all 55 counties.  The Daily Athenaeum

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Biafora family business dispute between Marina 1 LLC operating as Cheat Lake Marina and Lake Lynn Generation over last summer’s drought is awaiting a federal judge’s ruling on whether the case will be dismissed, remanded back to Monongalia County Circuit Court, or continue in federal court — both sides have filed their briefs following a May hearing.  The Dominion Post

  • A West Virginia Morning segment on WVPB featured a local resident who recovered from problem gambling and now helps others while also reporting that Pennsylvania water providers removed PFAS from drinking water—actions tied to potential federal regulatory rollbacks.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, 13-year-old diving star ElliReese Niday will compete for Team USA at the USA Diving American Cup held at Peak Health Aquatic Center in Morgantown—she will begin her 10-meter preliminary round at 11:45 a.m. and join top divers from Japan, Australia, Canada and Korea—bringing Olympic-caliber competition to our community.  The Dominion Post
  • West Virginia University athletics announced new nonconference home football games at Milan Puskar Stadium for future seasons — UT-Martin will visit in 2026 on Sept. 12, VMI in 2027 on Sept. 11 and 2031 on Aug. 30, Youngstown State in 2028 on Sept. 9, Akron in 2028 on Sept. 16 and 2030 on Sept. 14, and Rhode Island in 2030 on Aug. 31. Season tickets for this season’s six home games are now on sale and include the 304 Mobile Pass option as the most affordable package.  West Virginia University
  • On Tuesday at Kendrick Family Ballpark, the Black Bears began their home season with a 7-6 win over the Williamsport Crosscutters—Sam Miller drove in the winning run in the eighth inning. The win improved their record to 3-2 and gave the Crosscutters their first loss as the team prepares to play almost daily until early September.  The Dominion Post
