  • More than 50 participants braved chilly weather at Alpine Resort Golf Course to raise funds for the Get Moving! Day of Play nonprofit, founded by Elizabeth Oppe to promote exercise for children & healthy lifestyles. The event featured par challenges with Mountaineer role models and plans for next year's tournament are already underway to enhance the festivities.  West Virginia University

  • WVU Industrial Extension and Blenko Glass Company have been featured in the Heroes of American Manufacturing video series—an initiative from the National Institute of Standards and Technology that spotlights small and medium-sized manufacturers and their innovative work in West Virginia.  West Virginia University

CRIME NEWS

  • Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office and the WV Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed that human remains found Monday between Scott Avenue and Smithtown Road belong to 33-year-old Andrew Tyler Sweitzer from Morgantown — Triton Construction workers discovered the remains while clearing land for a new industrial access road — and the investigation into his death is ongoing.  The Dominion Post
  • A man named Jeremy Nice, 37, was arrested on Thursday for malicious assault and domestic battery after he repeatedly punched a woman in the face during a domestic dispute at Healthy Heights Village—he left the scene before deputies arrived—and he is held on a $25,000 bond.  WDTV
  • Human remains discovered on June 2 in a wooded area between Scott Avenue and Smithtown Road were identified by the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office as those of 33-year-old Andrew Tyler Sweitzer, a Morgantown resident—investigators are looking into the cause of death.  The Daily Athenaeum

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Voters in towns will cast ballots on Tuesday, June 10 in over 70 contests as Secretary of State Kris Warner announced compliance visits will ensure polling sites follow safety protocols — this is the last Super Tuesday before Senate Bill 50 changes municipal election scheduling. Early voting ends at 5:00 p.m. today and citizens are urged to report any suspicious election activity.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting
  • Morgantown city officials plan to add the Public Safety Building as the city’s second safe surrender site today where newborns can be dropped off anonymously — this follows a state law update and a first reading of a new ordinance at city council. The council also approved changes that cut business license and business and occupation taxes for small sole proprietorships and independent contractors with revenue under $2,500 if adopted on June 17, with changes taking effect July 1.  The Dominion Post

SPORTS NEWS

  • Morgantown High School won its 7–5 semifinal game in the Class AAAA state tournament on Friday night at GoMart Ballpark in Charleston after senior relief pitcher Judd Messerly—called the Fireman—pitched 3.1 innings. The team will face top-seeded Hurricane in the championship game tonight with first pitch starting 50 minutes after the Class AAA contest begins at 5:30 p.m.  The Dominion Post
  • Today, Mountaineer GameDay Baseball Special airs on Nexstar TV stations, previewing the NCAA Super Regional matchup between WVU and No. 6 LSU with Nick Farrell hosting from Morgantown and Sydney Cariel providing live updates from Baton Rouge. Game one of the Super Regional starts at 2 p.m.—local fans are encouraged to tune in.  West Virginia University
