EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On May 17, 55 graduates became lifelong members of the WVU Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa—West Virginia’s only chapter—and Eberly College of Arts and Sciences Dean Gregory Dunaway was made an honorary member. The society honors top achievement in the liberal arts and sciences and is the oldest national honor society. West Virginia University
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Chad Matheny, who runs Core Metal Roofing and Supply and owns two rental houses in Richard, said he has struggled with extreme flooding on his properties for two years and asked the county commission for help—neighbors claim unpermitted fill dirt blocking a natural stream is to blame. Commission President Jeff Arnett noted the county can join in finding a fix but does not control private property measures. The Dominion Post

- ➤ Researchers at WVU found that Japanese American mothers who were likely detained as children in World War II camps gave birth to babies weighing less than those born to non-incarcerated mothers—babies weighed on average 81 grams less in one comparison. The study shows how early life trauma from forced incarceration continues to affect health outcomes. WVU Today

- ➤ The West Virginia Mountaineers track team began its NCAA East First Rounds competition on May 28 at Visit Jax Track at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville—having run the women’s 800 meters and 10,000-meter semifinals.
