BUSINESS NEWS

  • Strange Light Coffee and Books opened on April 30 at 304 Willey St, offering coffee, used books, board games and a private room for events. Owner Morgaine Sanders— a California native who left the film industry—opened the store to provide a welcoming space with a book exchange program that gives credit for donated books.  The Daily Athenaeum

CULTURE NEWS

  • This Book is Free and Yours to Keep won the 2024 Weatherford Award for nonfiction and compiles letters from incarcerated Appalachians served by the Appalachian Prison Book Project. Ellen Skirvin — one of the book’s editors — said the Morgantown-based project sends free books and supports education for people in prison across the region.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting
  • West Virginia Public Theatre will launch its summer season with the Broadway hit musical 'Waitress'—marking the show’s debut in the area. The production will be staged in Morgantown as a new cultural offering for local audiences.  WV News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WVU researchers are testing a new way to teach math that helps students use lessons from subjects like business and biology—faculty work together on course plans to make math easier to apply. The SUMMIT-P project has involved more than 170 teachers and helped about 90,000 students at over 40 colleges, and it will guide further improvements in college math courses.  West Virginia University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local residents and landowners met at WVU’s Ericson Alumni Center to learn about NextEra Energy Transmission’s plan — a 500 kV power line that will run from PA to Virginia, pass through four counties, and start service in 2031. Some property owners worry the project may harm their land and offer little local benefit — while NextEra says it will boost grid reliability and support renewable energy.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting

SPORTS NEWS

  • West Virginia University golfers Todd Duncan and Kaleb Wilson were named to the Division I PING All-Midwest Region Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America this weekend. Duncan played in every regular season meet and Wilson won his first collegiate tournament + it is the first time two players have earned the honor in the same season.  West Virginia University
  • Griffin Kirn, the WVU baseball pitcher, was named Student-Athlete of the Week after he threw a complete game against Cincinnati in the Big 12 quarterfinals—he struck out nine, walked one, and allowed three runs. The Mountaineers will play Kentucky tomorrow at noon from Doug Kingsmore Stadium during the NCAA Clemson Regional.  West Virginia University
