EDUCATION NEWS

  • Paula and Keith Lilly, both 1981 WVU graduates, announced planned gifts totaling $2M to fund scholarships for students in education, engineering, nursing & oral health care. The funds will support students meeting financial need and a 2.3 GPA with preference for those from Monongalia, Nicholas and Webster counties.  WVU Today
  • Dr. Jonathan Gore and Dr. Anna Hayton-Gore, who met in their first class at WVU School of Dentistry, graduated on May 27th and got married the next day before moving to Parkersburg to start their careers as dentists—marking a milestone in both their professional and personal lives.  WVU Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Families and outdoor enthusiasts will explore West Virginia's natural beauty at the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center on June 7 during Discover Nature Day. The USDA is hosting the event.  WV News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The West Virginia Division of Highways will start renovating 175 curb ramps throughout Morgantown this week using $1,070,307 in funding and SQP Construction Group to meet ADA standards—work will begin at Eighth Street and Beechurst Avenue with only one lane closed and is set to finish in August.  The Daily Athenaeum
  • The City of Morgantown announced Ordinance No. 2024-29 banning camping on public property with penalties ranging from written warnings to fines and possible jail time, while providing flyers and contacts for shelter services. On June 4th, the city will launch an alternative sentencing program — partnering with Valley HealthCare Systems to offer assessments and support for mental health, substance use, and housing challenges.  WDTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • James Mahoney, director of addictions research at the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, will share early findings on neuromodulation for addiction and digital health tools during a free lecture at 2:30 p.m. June 4 at the Mountaineer Mall in OLLI Classroom B—attendees can join in person or via Zoom.  West Virginia University
  • WVU is observing Mental Health Awareness Month and the Benefits Strategy Team is urging employees to use mental health resources such as a free counseling program plus a Mindfulness Summer Series with WVU Medicine, as well as a weekly book club starting June 5. Employees are reminded to check their leave balance since unused floating holiday hours will expire on June 30.  West Virginia University

SPORTS NEWS

  • The West Virginia baseball team is set to earn its third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth for the first time in 61 years as they prepare to face Kentucky in the Clemson Regional on Friday. The achievement follows record-setting wins and a share of the Big 12 regular season title — marking a strong comeback for the program.  West Virginia University
  • Today at 9:30 a.m., Trinity Christian High School softball will make its first state tournament appearance by playing against *top-ranked Pendleton County* after winning the Region I championship. The Warriors, who turned a losing 8-10 season into a 5-0 regional run with a comeback win over Magnolia, are set to prove themselves in Game 1 *of the tournament*.  The Dominion Post
