  • WVU will hold a ceremony honoring Capt. William McPherson—remembered as the Mountaineer Mascot who sacrificed his life in Vietnam 60 years ago—to mark his legacy and acknowledge West Virginians killed in America’s wars.  WV News

CRIME NEWS

  • Sukhjinder Singh, 37, was booked in the North Central Regional Jail on Saturday—he is charged with negligent homicide for allegedly driving a tractor-trailer recklessly during a snowstorm on January 27 and pushing a car off the I-68 Cheat Lake bridge into an icy lake, with bail set at $500,000.  MetroNews
  • Mary Lou Retton, the Olympic gold medalist and West Virginia native, was charged with a misdemeanor DUI in Fairmont on May 17—her $1,500 bond was posted by a family member on the day she was charged.  MetroNews

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Department of Human Services Secretary Alex Mayer gathered hundreds of comments on child welfare during eight listening sessions across the state—one held in Morgantown—to guide plans addressing staffing shortages, judicial delays, and inconsistent welfare checks, with formal improvements set to be announced in the coming weeks.  MetroNews

SPORTS NEWS

  • The WVSSAC State Softball Tournament begins Wednesday, May 28 at Little Creek Park in South Charleston and runs for four days—Class A and AA play on May 28-29, while Class AAA and AAAA play on May 30-31—with sixteen teams set to compete and MetroNews broadcasting all games live on the radio.  MetroNews
  • The Morgantown High School baseball team faces Wheeling Park in the Class AAAA Region I championship series today at 5:00 p.m. in Wheeling, with the winner earning a spot in next weekend’s state tournament in Charleston+ Game 2 will be at 5:30 p.m. in Morgantown and a decisive Game 3 will be held in Wheeling if needed.  The Dominion Post
  • West Virginia Baseball with a 41-14 record is headed to the Clemson Regional of the 2025 NCAA College Baseball Tournament in Clemson from May 30th to June 2nd. A win there will move the team into a double-elimination round and then a best-of-three series in the Super Regional starting June 6th — their aim is to reach the College World Series in Omaha beginning June 13th.  WDTV
