  • This week, West Virginia residents protested federal cuts while state officials plan to change SNAP benefits rules and stabilize the public employees insurance agency & Vandalia Gathering organizers shared tall tale contest tips.  West Virginia Public Broadcasting
  • Colleges saw research grants terminated under DOGE as the USDA ended a $4,795,047 WVU grant for the GRASS project on April 22 and the NSF cancelled a $447,803 racial equity grant on April 25; WVSU terminated its water quality project on April 7 and temporarily supported two employees—while the IRS closed its Wheeling office on April 28 to save $213,571.  The Dominion Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mon Medical Center achieved West Virginia's first combined atrial fibrillation treatment by using Boston Scientific's Watchman device — and Farapulse Pulsed Field Ablation system in one procedure, and Dr. Salam Sbaity said five more treatments are scheduled to reduce risks and recovery time for patients.  The Dominion Post

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Morgantown girls’ team won the Class AAA state track and field championship at Laidley Field in Charleston with 99 points over Huntington—MHS sophomore Elecia McCurrie won the 100-meter dash in 12.06 seconds and the 200-meter sprint in 24.80 seconds. In the boys’ division, University High School claimed the state title with 95 points as Kaleil Lewis edged his rival in the 110-meter hurdles while Trinity Christian’s Chase Livengood won the 400-meter run to secure 30 meet points.  The Dominion Post
  • On Friday at Laidley Field in Charleston, the Morgantown girls led the 2025 WVSSAC state track meet with 46 points—15 points ahead of the University girls’ 31—as senior Maraid Johnson won the 3200-meter run in 10:57.34 for Monongalia County Schools. In Class A, the Trinity Christian boys ranked second with 26 points while the UHS boys scored 28 points—one point behind Hurricane—as they set the early team standings.  The Dominion Post
  • After losing 12-1 to Arizona in the Big 12 semifinals on Friday at Globe Life Field, the Mountaineers' chance to host an NCAA baseball regional in Morgantown next weekend is in doubt due to six losses in eight recent games. Regional hosts will be announced Sunday night and the bracket released Monday at noon — their 27th RPI means even a tournament win might not guarantee a regional.  The Dominion Post
